Exclamation K1200RS Trans Fluid and Final Drive Fluid

Hey Guys:

I just picked up a 2003 K1200RS with 12K miles. I decided to take a chance and try the Redline "Lightweight Shockproof Gear Oil" in my Trans and Final Drive.

I am not sure if I like the product or not (at $11 a quart you'd think I would). In the past I have always used Mobile 1 75W90 Synthetic. Any thoughts on wich products you would recommend. Thanks!

Pete

Where did you read that synthetic oil was an alternative to using a hypoy high pressure oil in the final drive?

When you learn how expensive wrong decisions can be, you become more cautious, don't 'take chances' and are respectful of the BMW recommended oil specifications - but you don't need to buy their branded oils.

Search this forum for 'final drive' and you'll get up to speed.

As far as I am aware BMW recommend an API:GL5 standard oil.
They also recommend sae 90w

I use (recommended by local dealer) Comma GL5 sx75w90. (Synthetic Based) Says "Enhanced shear stability, so may be used in any gearbox or hypoid back axle where a GL5 oil is required" on the back of the bottle....

I was not aware that 'hypoid' had to be specified, I thought 'GL5' covered that, but BMW specifically state "hypoid GL5 SAE 90w"

I haven't had a problem... yet...

So check here.. http://yarchive.net/car/hypoid_gear_oil.html

It confirms my 'GL5' theory

PS I ALWAYS recommend fully synthetic.... but AFTER running in is best..

I run Redline Heavy ShockProof Gear Oil in my transmission and final drive. It's been in there for 12500 miles now.

Thumbs up Update

Hey All:

Thanks for the replies. I decided to error on the side of caution and put back in Valvoline Semi-Synthetic 80W90 GL5.

I suspect I would have been just fine with the Redline product, but I did not want to take any chances... Thanks for the advice!
