Extended Warranty

Doing a search on extended warranties it looks like three companies keep popping up. Interstate National Dealer Services, Western Service Contract Corporation, and Pinnacle Protection Plan.

Those of you that have one of these plans, have used one of the plans, or have researched the variables in these plans. I sure would appreciate some feedback.

I've heard good stuff about all three. I've got Western and made sure it covers stuff like ABS, electrics, etc. Obscure stuff that can cost a lot to repair.

I didn't get an extended warranty on the LT simply because I never kept a bike long. I blew thru the 36k miles in way less than two years, ended up keeping the bike for seven years and spent many thousands of dollars while my friends paid $25 bucks because they had extended warranty.

Not this time, dammit!

Grif,
Thanks for the reply. I'm placing an order for an '08 on Monday or Tuesday and I want to make the extended warranty part of the deal. My dealer has ZERO extended warranty options to offer to customers. I gave the salesman the contact info for Western and Interstate. I'll see what he comes up with?? Hard to figure out who some of these companies are and who and what is behind them if you have a claim.

I just added a policy to my wifes MINI Cooper S. The warranty was from Warranty Direct. They are the consumer division of Interstate National Dealers Association and are allowed to sell over the internet. Interstate is the same company that provides auto warranties to AAA. Which, in itself, is not a bad endorsement of Interstate. But, if you go directly to Warranty Direct( Interstate) you can get more extensive coverage than that provided by the AAA ( Interstate) policies. Interstates motorcycle division is Interstate Star Sport(???).
One would think that they would have pretty good coverage. However, on their website I saw no options for adding more coverage to cover things such as ABS modules.

So, it goes on and on. I just want to get the coverage I want for a fair price. I'll let ya know what I end up with.
Regards

Warranty

I have had Western Services on my last three bikes from the time they were new and on 1 that I bought used. The used one had the warranty on it and it only cost $25 to transfer it. I even transferred it to the new owner when I sold it Claims (what few I had) were covered and I just paid the deductible.

My recommendation is go with Western YMMV of course.

OK, I was wrong, I have Interstate Star. Paid $950 for 84 months, unlimited mileage, no deductible and it covers ABS.
It covers the engine, water pump, turbocharger(!!??), tranny, primary drive, drive axle assembly, front and rear suspension, steering, brakes, electrical, gauges, fuel system, seals and gaskets and touring bike (digital dasy components, control cables, factory sound system, fairing hardware, brackets, switches, covers, latches and hinges, saddlebag/travel trunk latches, hinges and mounting hardware)

Doesn't cover consumables like light bulbs, clutch, brake pads, etc.

Sorry about the erroneous info, I had to dig the paperwork out.

Since I am really happy with the two bikes I currently own, I'm relatively sure I will keep them for a long time, so I am thinking of buying the extended warranty coverage too.

However, I would far prefer a factory BMW policy rather than aftermarket. Does BMW have a service contract of their own or are there only aftermarket policies?

MikeM,
From my research I have concluded that there is no extended warranty program through or endorsed by BMW. If you find out I'm wrong, please post.

grif,
Thanks for your policy info. It gives me something to shoot for.

I bought my extended warranty from a BMW dealer, BMW doesn't offer one.

It seems odd to me to add to the best warranty in the industry. It's my humble opinion but 3 years and 36,000 miles isn't enough? Most sheep don't ride that far in a lifetime, let alone in 3 years.

I'm on my 4th BMW motor bike and have yet to suffer an expensive repair. Perhaps my day is coming, I don't know, but I think the bikes are well made in general and the warranty when new or close to it is very good.

Good luck on your warranty,

Gravity

And you're assuming we're all sheep? :) I bought my '07 GT at the end of May and now have close to 34K on it, meaning my factory warranty is good for less than a year. Now if it was 3 years, unlimited miles that might make a difference.

I didn't have an extended warranty on my LT, and I ended up paying a few repairs out of pocket that would have been covered. I knew the GT would also be a high mileage bike, so I did the research. Pinnacle and Western Services consistently got good reviews from customers and dealers alike. When I spoke to my dealer about it, they said that they only deal with Pinnacle and Western Services based on their own positive experiences with those two companies.

So now I'm covered under most circumstances for up to 7 years. To me, it was worth the small extra cost added onto the price of the bike. And in fact, I got enough of a discount on the bike price that the extended warranty was basically free.

So it may not make sense for everyone. But there are many of us for whom it does make sense. And in the end, we each have to weigh the cost/benefits and decide for ourselves.

I rode my LT 108,000 miles. It was out of warranty, due to mileage, in less than two years, as will the GT. I spent many thousands on the LT that I wouldn't have had to if I'd done an extended warranty. Not this time.

BTW, Ken, LoneStar only offers the Interstate extended warranty now, they had problems with, ah hell, I can't remember, but it was one of those you listed, and they quit using them.

My BMW was out of warranty at exactly 24 months. With the Western Services contract, I am covered 'til 07/2012.
I am one of the light duty riders on this site, having put only 42K miles on my '04KRS(purchased 07/05) in 29mos.

Lets face it, extended warranties are insurance contracts.

You hope you never use it. If thats the case, have you been cheated? How much is the piece of mind worth? Also, how pissed can you get that you didn't suffer any serious problems with your bike?

On the other hand if you do have a mechanical breakdown, it will undoubtedly pay for itself with one repair.

Like with all insurance policies....it is your decision. Buy it or take your chances.

Warranty for the sheepish...

grif and Dave,
Could you let me know how much you ended up paying for your warranty and what the term and mileage is? Also, what additional coverages would you recommend adding to the policy. Thanks
Paid $900 for the last one. $995 for the previous. Both took the warranty out to 7 years/unlimited mileage. I am sure I will be out of factory warranty by this time next year. I have had the 08 for almost two months now and just passed 4,300 miles this morning.

Western Services Co. does not sell to the public. Only through a dealer. Call them and they might steer you to one closest to you.
What extended warranty does Sierra BMW in Sparks sell??

Great thread. I was wondering about this topic as the selling dealer offered one to me but I didn't take it. It was stated I can get one anytime before the last month of the BMW warranty. Don't recall the company, and sure didn't know it was another $1k- yikes! Probably worth it though.

FWIW,
Well, this is what I've learned over the last few days. The 3 top players in Extended Warranty ( Service ) Plans seem to be Interstate Star Sport, Pinnacle Protection Plan, and Western Services Contract Corporation.

My dealer doesn't work with any company that sells an extended warranty. So, I looked into the plans and their availability to purchasers outside of the dealerships. You can buy these policies only through dealers or businesses that are authorized by the insurance companies. With these 3 companies there are no direct sales over the internet.

That being said. You can purchase the warranty from any authorized sales rep in the country. Although I didn't want to shop this to death. I did want to make sure I was getting a fair deal. So, I called around.

Pinnacle sells policies on bikes that are more than 12 months old. This feature gave one dealer the ability to sell used bikes with an extended warranty. Pinnacle probably sells plans for new bikes. But I wasn't hearing the Pinnacle name quite as much as the other two companies so I narrowed my search to Interstate and Western.

Western had a terrific sales rep. Connie-- 1-800-543-5225 x3099. She took plenty of time to explain the warranty in detail and answer all my questions. Connie referred me to the #1 BMW sales leader in the country for a quote on a Western 4 year ( 3+4) unlimited mileage policy. I also called Lone Star BMW, thanks grif, and spoke to Jenny-- 512-451-7979. Jenny was also very thorough and patient, answering all my questions. Jenny sells both the Interstate and Western policies. The last place I called was Honda Of Florence, KY. I spoke with Marci-- 1-859-371-1212. She sells the Interstate plans.

The quotes I got from TX and KY were comparable to each other on the same plans. The quote I got from the other dealer was more than double the quote I got from Jenny on the Western plan.

At this point, I'm still a bit uncertain as to which company I will use. I'm pretty sure you can't go wrong with either company. As I mentioned earlier, my wifes MINI is insured through Warranty Direct which is part of Interstate. AAA also sells auto plans to it's members and the plans are through Interstate. It's a good company. But I was very impressed in my phone conversations with Western sales reps. Their reputation for paying and standing behind their product seems to be backed up from what I was told by a major BMW dealer.

One thing I do know. Connie at Lone Star BMW sells what I think are two of the top extended service contracts. When I get ready to buy a plan, I'm calling her. It's going to cost a few bucks but at least I know I'm not getting taken for a ride. Note to self---if you decide to go with Interstate, give Marci a call. She might do better than Jenny. If you decide to go with Western, call Jenny.

Speaking of rides. After drooling over y'alls rides since 2006. Today, I put my deposit down on a 2008 GT. Yahoo!!

Regards,

Whether to shit or go blind

I too am thinking about an extended warranty. I have been burned once, the company went out of business! A friend of mine, who sells car warranties, suggested I just put several thousand dollars in a money market account.
On the other hand if I purchased an extended warranty on everything I have bought in the last seven years I would have spent more than the cost of a new motorcycle! I traded my 02 K1200rs and then my 04 K1200RS with less than 100 miles left on their warranties. Nice bikes but I could see that they were going to be shop queens.
If I like a bike I tend to keep it longer than any warranty will cover.
It's a dilemma I need to sort out within 9,000 miles.
