Not so happy with the dealership

Picked up my KR on Tuesday.

I looked at the front rotors which are stamped 4mm, and that the bike was make 10/05.

To me, that means it is included in the ABS recall. I asked the salesman, and to told me the bike was too new to be included in that. When I was looking it over, I asked the mech and he told me he ran the VIN and no service was needed. Again, I knew this was BS.
Yesterday I called BMW Customer Service and was told the following, but I had them also send it in email so I have documentation:

Thank you for contacting BMW Motorrad USA regarding any open recalls on your motorcycle. Our records indicate that there is one open recall number 06V-164 regarding an ABS banjo bolt restrictor, and one open service action regarding a valve adjustment. If you need anything else feel free to contact me at (800) 831-1117 ext 6292.
The software was old, and still shows '0' instead of 'N' for neutral on the computer.

Speaking of the computer, I have the upgraded BC option. The oil pressure just shows ----- all the time.

And here is the worst part. The salesman told me 36 months, 36,000 mile warrantee. BMW Customer Service told me that the bike was entered into a 'demo' status in Dec 05. Even though the bike had 23 miles on it when I bought it Tuesday, the warrantee started back in Dec 05 (with a 2 month kicker), so that means I lost 6 full months of warrantee coverage. That is a major slap in my face that the dealer lied about. The dealer is Country Rode Motowerks in Fairport NY (Near Rochester)

i'd be on my way back to the dealer to raise a little sand especially over the warrenty issue. it's possible but unlikely the sales person didn't know about the warrenty issue. i would first give them the benefit of the doubt and give the dealer a chance to make things right. if you lost 6 months of warrenty time the dealer should have notified you prior to selling you the bike and at least given you something to make it up.

i'm not sure why they wouldn't know about the recall stuff, in my opinion warrenty work is free money to the dealership, so i don't know why they would turn it away. anyway, it sounds like a bunch of idiots and assholes working up there and after you get things straightened out i wouldn't do business with them again. good luck

I would confront the dealer and ask for a refund, as he sold you the bike as "new" and it was a "demo". Unless, he makes a hefty refund ( which you can apply to an extended warranty), I would threaten legal action. I assume he is an authorized BMW dealer.

DO NOT LET HIM GET AWAY with illegal dealings.

typically a dealer will get money back from the manufacturer for demo bikes. it gives them a good incentive to have demos and to make up for the lost profit on selling a demo. i'm not sure what type of deal you got on the bike but if it was a demo then your purchase agreement should have stated such. also, the dealer might have a tough time explaining to bmw why a six month old demo bike only has 23 miles on it.

just some food for thought.

The dealer either...

(1) scammed BMW by registering a bike as a demo bike which wasn't used as such.

(2) scammed you by rolling back the odometer on a demo bike.

...either way, you deserve your money back. Get a lawyer and fight it.

Howdy Coastie,

I know you're venting about this because I'd be steamed about it as well.

The question of the moment is, "what do you want to do?"

Perhaps involve the BMW Customer Service in assisting with a resolution...
Try to get the dealer to buy you an extended warranty, 6 years. This seems reasonable, gives you extra coverage and the cost to the dealer is about what they would have discounted due to the "demo" status of the bike. The dealer's cost on the warranty is probably around $750-$850 so it should be a do-able deal.

As far as warranty work on the bike, time to find a new place to take it.

For routine maintenance, since very little work on the bike requires propriety tools, any good mechanic can perform the work.

Please let us know what the resolution is.

I would like to keep the bike, and the next closest dealer is about 135 miles away ( about 100 miles further then the 35 I ride to this one)

I would be overly happy if they can work an extended warrantee. I think I did get a decent deal, about 1700 off sticker, panniers thrown in and installed. Never did he mention ‘demo’ though. The word demo would not have bothered me, but the warrantee issue does. Also the fact that I have been interested in BMWs for all of about 2 weeks (sorry, late to the BMW game) and in those 2 weeks even I know this bike has an ABS recall. A BMW mech sure as hell should know that. And yes they are an authorized BMW dealership.

I’ll give them a call this afternoon.

Again, does your Bill of Sale say "demo"? That is the most important part of putting pressure on the dealer. In any case, you got a great bike and it will give you many miles of pleasure.
But DO NOT LET THE DEALER GET AWAY SCOT FREE !!

The bill of sale says NEW, it has 4 check boxes.

New
Used
Demonstrator
Salvage

New is checked.

I called the dealership this afternoon, but my salesman was not in today. I will call again tomorrow.

The biggest danger I see is if the bike has had its odometer rolled back...conceivably, you might own a bike that has been ridden hard for several hundred miles...without regard to break in procedures.

Good luck finding a resolution...and if you have a minute post this story to the Adventure rider vendor forum.

I've had my KR for a couple of months and have a little over 2000 miles on it. Mine is also a 10/05 and the dealer told me the same thing. I had to push them hard (basically I was a pain in the ass) to get them to perform the upgrade. A couple of weeks ago they replaced the banjo bolt, added an extra clip on the brake line, and replaced the rotors. Basically, the new rotors are a little thicker. At slower speeds, I get a little vibration while braking. The dealer is telling me this will "go away" once the new rotors are broke in.

Now, a little about the KR experience. It is fast, runs great and gets alot of attention! Unfortunately, I will be relocating soon and need to sell mine :( .

Stay on top of your dealer and they will eventually replace the rotors. Enjoy the bike!

You got them by the short hairs. If you want to keep the3 bike( which I am sure you will !!), ask for some pie in the sky rebate number like $5000.00,extend the warranty, and do all the recall service, plus throw in the 600 mile service. Threatedn them with a call to the Attorney general of your state. Also, get some advice from a licensed lawyer. DO NOT LET THEM GET AWAY !
Oh, also, notify BMW of North America....

if they gave you a 1700 dollar discount off MSRP along with free panniers, $700 value, it seems to me a fair deal eventhough you lost 6 months of warrenty time and the bike was a demo. when i purchased my "S" the best i could do was 1000 off MSRP which I was more than happy with considering i got a really decent amount in trade for my 2003 KRS. when i purchased my "S" back in may there was a demo "R" with less than 100 miles on her, but I don't know how long it had been on the floor. it's hard for me to believe a dealership would roll back the odometer but i wouldn't put anything past people these days. i think you got a excellent deal but they still should have told you the bike was a demo and you were - 6 months on the warrenty. let us know the outcome and good luck.

I have been reading this thread with great interest given that I have done business with this dealer since 1999. I can tell you that my experience with this dealer has been just the opposite. They will do anything they can to make the customer happy. If they make a mistake, they will admit to it and make it right. There service personnel have extensive experience and knowledge of BMW products and can be trusted. They are not a high volume dealership who look at a sale as just another sale. They are all about the customer, before, during and after the sale. If you buy them, they will remember you.

I can assure you that if the odometer on the bike says 26 miles, then the bike has 26 miles on it. If the paperwork has been done incorrectly, I would contact the people at Countryrode immediately. If your salesman is not in, I would ask for Art (the owner). He is usually there and is always willing to help.

If I were this individual, I would have contacted the owner (Art) and discussed this matter before publishing this information all over the internet. I would encourage this customer to go visit the dealership and try to get these issues resolved and report to forum on the outcome.

I would also encourage anyone traveling through Rochester, NY to stop and visit this dealership.

By the way, I am not affiliated with this dealership in any form. I am just a customer that has been treated very well.

I have no real problems with the people in the dealership. The salesman worked with me to get a good deal, got me the extras I wanted, swapped plastics (yellow for silver) at a nominal cost. I think this was a minor oversight on the dealership part, but it is a big deal to me. Warrantee was one of the deciding factors for this bike over the other brand I was looking at with a 2yr warrantee. They do not offer an extended warrantee, and they may be strapped with BMW on what they can really do. I’d be happy if they would honor the warrantee locally AND PUT IT IN WRITING, but also since I am in the military and will transfer this year or next, they will need to work something should I be out of the area for warrantee work. The dealership is clean, good people. It was never in my head that they would roll back the odometer, they seem to be honest people. I’ve made mistakes before, but then I had to do the right thing, and that is what they need to do here. I was in contact with them today, nothing is resolved yet, but it is a start.

I'm not completely sure of the details but I don't think that the dealer gets any money back for a demo until/unless the bike has 1400 or so miles on it. So, if this guy is going to lie to BMW to get cash...it's fraud. Contact BMWNA about this deal!
