So I got a DWA warning on my bike. I understand this relates to the batteries inside the alarm unit (not the fob). Has anybody replaced these batteries? If so what's the process? All comments on experience with this are welcome.

I did that job for K1200S. You have same DWA unit so procedure is simple. Just open dwa unit, unscrew battery cover and change batteries. Put cover back and you can drive again.

Nearby couple of photos.

Just had the same issue with mine. Thanks for sharing the tips - very helpful. Local BMW retailer said their technical support guidance is to replace the entire alarm when the battery goes flat - they agree this is completely unnecessary as it’s a five minute job to replace the batteries.

Are those special batteries or can you get them anyplace? Is there a specific BMW part number?
Hi! I am living in Finland, so I do not know your sourcing possibilities. So I cannot answer where from you can find them.

They are not normal. They are 3 V batteries.

But I did not purchase them from BMW. I have purchased them from a shop selling all kind of electronics stuff. They have quite wide variety of batteries there. I think mine are now Varta batteries. Sorry, I do not have Varta number available. But brand and number are not important. Size and 3 V matters.

Got the DWA warning on my instrument display. Checked owners manual. Told me that my alarm system batteries were depleted. No idea where they are located. Searched this forum, found the answer, located batteries, removed them. New batteries on order. Problem solved. Saved me phone calls and a trip to the dealer. I love this forum!

I just tried this on my '06 K12R and after changing the batteries, I've found that my alarm won't activate/deactivate w/ the remote AND the red LED continues to blink on the instrument cluster. The bike will still start and run. Did u guys have to re-set anything after changing the alarm module batteries?

Hey AJ, thanks for a suggestion. I checked the battery placement ad nauseum over the last several days but heck, upon your suggestion, I went out and checked again. They're in correctly. I was in touch w/ a BMW mechanic who pretty much suggested all of the measures I took re-synching the key fob, etc. I was then in touch w/ a dealership who informed me they'd have to run a computer diagnostic to find out what the problem is. So much for trying to cut corners and do this as a DIY project. I guess to the dealership I go (over 50 miles away)!

Related to this, I did find an alarm module unit available on line for the bike for about $250. They mention that it's a "plug and play" item (simply disconnect old unit...install new unit). I was wondering if it would be worth the hassle for me to get the bike to the dealership (which is about 50 miles away), arrange rides to and back etc. I'm wondering what the cost might be for them just to run a diagnostic on the unit..and then if they have to replace it.. $$$ I'm figuring if just having the dealership look at it and diagnose the problem is going to cost me $100-$150 or so...it's probably more worth my while just to purchase the new unit. I figure my time and effort to get rides etc., is worth $100 to $150 to me.

I've read lots of posts on the GS forums where they don't get over changing the battery - same unit, and pretty sure they certainly aren't plug and play

seeing as a lot of this thread was really early days - I doubt the battery could have been wrong - oddly software flash of the alarm is one of the most common modules that receives updates

my k1600 alarm has had 4 updates on a 2019 bike !, and my old gs (2007) when updated in 2018 certainly got the alarm module flashed

I wonder then if its software issues, and or leave the warning too long and the module "magically" slips into an unrecoverable situation (who'd think BM might manage that?)

My bike had the same error message a year ago. Back then it ran on 2010 software version (not sure what the number was), but it was just as simple as putting in new batteries and the error was gone. Maybe try disconnecting the main battery of the bike for about 24h or so. That should drain the remaining power left in the system and clear out any codes. May not work, but it's an easy test.
