2008 k1200GT D1R low beam not staying lit

I have a 2008 K1200GT with a D1R xenon low beam. The bulb in the bike that was working is a phillips brand #85409. When I start the bike it used to come on and then over time if it didn't come on when it was started it would not come on at all. If I restarted the bike it would sometimes come back on. this lasted about a week or 2. now it does not come on at all but will give a single flicker sometimes when it is started. So I replaced the bulb and it did not fix the problem. Some friends tell me its the ballast and I'm asking if the metal base of this style of bulb is a ballast ?, but nobody seems to know. the local dealership says it may be the xenon light control unit which costs $630 CAD and if i buy it I own it. So I'd like to know if anyone has any experience with D1R bulbs not staying lit. tks

The ballast is a separate module.

I also had an HID bulb burn out and it needed a new module too.

However, the HID system was an aftermarket unit that I installed for about 1/10 of the BMW parts price. You should be able to replace the BMW part with an aftermarket unit or try beemerboneyard.com.

Aftermarket will require cutting and splicing wires.

here is the first part of an aftermarket HID installation http://www.k-bikes.com/forums/showpo...57&postcount=1
