K1600GT Review

Here's a rider's review of the K1600GT done by Kevin Ash, a UK moto-journalist who attended BMW's South African launch.

Ken
Pacific NorthWet
'13 Dark Graphite Metallic K16GTLD, 24K miles and counting...
'09 Magnesium Beige Metallic K13GT, 60K miles miles and counting...
'02 Mauve Metallic K12LTC, 106K miles and sold
BMWLT#145, IBA# 366, MOA# 111996, SCMA# 24032

All lower 48 states plus Alaska on the K13GT in two weeks . . .

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Thanks Ken....good reading.

Mileage seems a little low....

"but this suggested 42mpg (14.9km/l, 6.7l/100km, 35.1mpg US) in fairly typical touring riding, falling to 35mpg (12.4km/l, 8.1l/100km, 29mpg US) when scraping the footrests and working the engine hard."

It will be interesting to see when the real world numbers start to roll in.

Overall though I'm thinking there are gonna be a lot of folks that will still be wishing there was a 12/13 GT available. (Especially one with an updated engine design!)

Underwhelmed

Great to read an actual road test, Thanks Meese. I must say I'm underwhelmed with Kevin's description of torque. Having to downshift at least one, maybe 2 gears on a 6? I think I'll be content with my k12 for a while. I put 2,000 miles on a Wing and for a heavy bike it accelerates off the line pretty well, but the new k16 has more torque but doesn't feel as quick. Time and more tests will tell.

Wait and See?

I had been an early adopter of several "R" and "K" bikes, including an early 2006 K12GT (the first batch delivered in April 06 in California). I have mix feelings about the excitement of being one of the happy few who get one early on but also helping the company fixing many bugs and sometimes deficiencies (hardware and software).
This time I'm really torn: a true new bike (engine, frame, hw and sw) is scary; I'm afraid to be left sowewhere in central California under 100F with a bike that simply needs a "computer reset". At the same time, it's a pretty good looking bike that would fit well in my garage in May or June...
Can we really trust BMW that this time, they have covered the tens of thousands of miles to fix most bugs? Thoughts?

My last three bikes--GL1800 Goldwing, K1200GT, and K1300GT were all ordered sight unseen, pre-release. All had problems. Most recently, the "switch cluster" problem left me with a very bad taste in my mourth re BMW's attitude toward their customers.
Bottom line: this time, I'm going to wait.
