re shockers

Someone gave me the book "Long Way Down" for my birthday I note at the start of the ride they are on new Ohlins, specially fitted. Half way through the ride these shockers have self destructed, in some God forsaken country. They have to get new standard shockers flown in.

I have often wondered why some riders decide that BMW can not make decent shockers. I cannot recall all the Beemers I have owned, but I recall the suspension was as good when sold as when first purchased. Previous bike did 130 thou before a truck reversed into me, current bike has 80 thou up. If it aint broke why fix it.

First, BMW doesn't make shocks. They by them from Showa unless they are the magic ESA shocks, which I believe comes from Works.I believe Ohlins makes their own version of ESA that can be fitted to BMW's (or some of them anyway). Would be interesting to know if they had the ESA or just the standard-type of suspenders.

neither showa makes oem bmw shocks nor works the esa system, they may do replacements. i knew the original manufacturers, once even intended to buy an esa kit for my gsa. never had ohlins but people i know are swearing there is big difference vs. stock.

Ok, let me rephrase, then.

The shocks that came on the 2003 K1200 GT I bought were made by Showa. Not replacements, the OEM shocks. Available with straight spring rate (white spring) or progressive spring rate (yellow spring). They're rebuildable, but the cost of converting them to a rebuildable shock is about the same as a new one.
White Power (shock provider) provided the initial ESA shock for the 2005 K1200S and later provided a means of having the OEM shock rebuilt.

BMW does not build the shocks for their motorcycles.
Like they also don't build the motor for the F800 series (Rotax) or the front forks of the S1000RR (Ohlins)

shockers

Finished the book. They blew seals in the factory standard shockers also. Interesting to see the list of spares that Boorman and McGregor had at their disposal, and the comprehensive tool kit.

Shoot...I spelled White Power wrong

I'll edit my original post. Works didn't make the ESA shock. My apologies
