Question Ping: easyman05 in Russia

I have a question for you.

I got seriously chewed out by a Korean at work for using a microwave oven. He said "Don't you know Russia outlawed them in 1976 and did studies against their use?" He wanted me to use the slower-cooking oven for food as it was "Safer." He said neither him nor his wife use their built-in microwave at home (maybe they used it twice).

He went into some this-to-that chemical changes in food to carcinogens as well as some study where blood taken after consuming food microwaved, and not from a conventional oven, produced changes in the eater's blood chemistry (lower white blood cells among others). Something said about gastric cancer as well (which I heard is now hitting the 20-30 year old's here now in the U.S.). He made me a little more apprehensive about using mine.

Just wondering if it was true what he said about them being outlawed there?

Tia.

BS. If the "nukers" caused gastric cancer, every American whoever ate in a fast food outlet or even a good top quality restaurant, would have ulces by now, I am not an MD, but I don't think that they are unsafe at all. They don';t always heat evenly,...Your "friend" has his info up his butt....

There is some truth to what your friend says, but its more complex than his claim. Problem with microwaves has nothing to do with the technology itself, it has to do with what you use to hold the food you heat with microwave ovens. Some plastics, not sure which ones, leach carcinogens into the food when heated with a microwave. The plastics to stay away from are labeled with a triangle, and number I just don't recall the number.

I am pretty sure we are all going to die of something but I would prefer it not to be starvation

1. BS. They did not outlaw microwaves in Russia. There was a plant in my hometown (Riga, Latvia, part of USSR back then) that manufactured them (in the 80s). My friend's father was an engineer working on their development.

2. Microwaves are not that good for you . My dad recently dug up some study and, instead of showing it to me, he showed it to my wife at first. The study kinda does make sense. The study was not intended for general audience, rather scientists, so mere mortals cannot understand a word in there. My wife didn't but... we're not allowed to warm up food for our children anymore using the microwave I'll see if I can find the study and post a copy here.

Hell, there are studies that say smoking is good for you. Short of putting carcingens into, onto, or used as a container, a microwave isn't harmful to you. All it does is excite the water molecules in the food to generate heat via radio waves.

I remember a report that there were a bunch of microwaves, not sure if they were made in Cinncinati or not, that had faulty door seals and if you sat with your testies next to the door, it increased the chance of testicular cancer. Every since, I just make the wife heat my food.

Gotta protect the jewels.
