FOR all Constable Karen Lowden knew, she was sitting next to a live bomb and a scared teenager, both facing the possibility they could be blown to smithereens at any moment.

The constable was the first on the scene at Maddie Pulver's home on Wednesday afternoon. She walked into the expansive lounge and saw the petrified teenager with a collar bomb around her neck.

For two long hours the young constable sat with Maddie, reassuring her that everything would be all right.

"In the initial car crew there was a young female officer who took it upon herself, while her mate was evacuating the neighbours, to stay with her through about the first two hours of her ordeal," said Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch.
