You mean Red Bluff to Fortuna. Yes I have done the ride twice and everything that you have heard or read about it is probably true!!!! I found it best to do the ride very early Sunday mornings(leave at or before dawn). When you leave Red Bluff and the famous road sign shows a twisty road ahead and the notation sign below it says"next 126mi." it ain't kidding!

I rode it last year and will likely go back in Sept. I think this is one of the real gems in our part of the world. Let those guys ride the 13 mile Dragon. LOL
Man, we got a hundred miles of rolling turns, tight cliff hanging turns, fast sweeping runs. That entire area of NorCal is filled with some very fine roads. Oh, but don't tell anyone, it's our secret.

I've been on 36 and it can get hot in the summer.

But I think my new favorite is 70 from Oroville to Quincy. It's listed as the Scenic Feather River Byway now - and it is! About the same distance at 129 miles but road is in nice shape and it has cool tunnels, and bridges, along with the trains. Nice Scooter Cafe about midway.

Hwy. 89 through Lassen is also nice, albeit a shorter 30 miles.

I just returned from my 36 adventure. I started from the Van Duzen county Park Swimmers Delight campground. Just east of Alton. The ranger set me up with fire wood paper ect. I met some riders from eueka and bs'ed around the campfire. Took off the next morning ( Sunday ) mostly bikes on the road, all but one pickup pulled over and let me pass as soon as I came up behind them, fun fun fun. The really tight corners on top are narrow with no centerline. I found enough gravel on the tight corners with banks on the inside to keep me from any extreem riding. The high speed turns were clear of gravel and I took them faster. I did not see police. At the bottom down closer to red bluff the road turns into a rollercoaster with up and down and all around. also 100ft or so of construction and gravel road. I would recomend 395 thru Oregon also that was fun 140mph shhhh.

Just within the past week, a lot of the streets in my suburban neighborhood have been tarred and then gravel thrown over them. I don't see why they do this when a nice blacktop will suffice. Not only does the gravel present a slippage hazard when turning, but it gets thrown up to hit whoever and whatever is directly behind.

I hate gravel.

I've done Hwy 36 from Red Bluff to Fortuna a half-dozen times tho have not done it this year. It's the best road that I've ever ridden.

If you are going to spend any time at all in Northern California then pony up the $20 and pay for a subscription to pashnit.com. There is a wealth of information on that site and IMO the annual fee is paid back many times over.
