Blue Ridge Parkway

The leaves are gone. The tourist are gone. It's ours. All ours. Until the first snows close it around mid December the Blue Ridge Parkway will be open and empty. All we need is enough warmth to keep ice out of the tunnels. Ours, all ours. "Home" is just of to the right down in the valley, about 45 twisty minutes away.

Blue Ridge Parkway, from Black Balsam. Milepost 420 ish.

CABN,the wind poss-o-tively HOWLED all day today here. Not fit for man nor beast.Just ain't much fun tryin to even ride on days like today. The leaf color here was way late, much to the chagrin of the hoards of peapers.I "seen" one tour bus back in the middle of Oct. and had to laugh....poor basterds traveled all that way to look at green leaves HaHa.Anyhoo, after todays wind there isn't any leaves to look at,green or otherwise.Thussly, the riding season begins.Weekdays are best, many which will see you riding for hours on end not seeing another vehicle. For those not familiar with 4 season riding here in the mnts. BE FU*KING CAREFUL wrt to N and NW slopes. These slopes will not see Mr. Sun till next March/April.Small seepy water thats been unoticed and not a problem all year is now just waiting for the "unwashed".Be dang vigilant on Suns location and how it affects your turn strategies.

Last year I got the bike out for a quick blast after work. Took a road that I ride often and know well. It was 55 degrees and hadn't snowed in THREE weeks!! I rounded a blind left hander, shady side, and it was SOILD ICE in my lane. Nailed the brakes and made a good stop, but too close. MY ROAD, and I got complacent. I also got lucky. Good advice, Brian. North side, shady. I knew that, and still almost screwed the pooch.

Tunnels are risky all day if it's been below freezing overnight. Drip. Drip. Drip.

Augh, but the clear days are nirvana.

p.s. Bear, you'd love it!

What about the riding conditions in late March/early April? Empty roads and reasonable temps? Wish I had been able to make it this fall, but didn't work out, so I hope to do a BRP/Gap trip in the Spring.

March is amazigly weird here. It will be 65 one day and snow the next. There's no good way to tell what it will do. Can you wait until May and make BRPR, Peaks of Otter, May 4-7, 2006? The roads are usually empty up high until Easter. Bring an electric vest and warm gloves. Mornings can be chilly, even if it's going to be a mid-60s day.

The heaviest snowfall for the month of May in North Carolina goes to Mt. Pisgah. 57" of snow fell there on May 7th in 1992. (actually 57" at the top of Mt Pisgah. We drove to Pisgah Inn the next day. They only had 3 feet.)

I'm getting married April 22nd, had hoped to do something prior to that, but may wait. I'm not familiar with the event you mention, but I'll look into it. Much thanks.
