Seattle to Tucson advice please
I'm new so I hope it's OK to ask this here.
I'm riding Seattle to Tucson and back in late September-October. I have two weeks. I have a family event in Tucson so the way down will be Seattle - Redding, CA, Redding to Bakersfield, all on I-5. Then a couple of days visiting family before Bakersfield to Tucson.
I'm looking for advice on the Bakersfield to Tucson leg. I want to avoid LA. Google maps shows several hwy routes between Barstow and I-10. I've never been in that area. So my question is this: If I'm going through Barstow, what's the best route to Tuscon? Since it's a 600+ mile day I don't want to make it much longer than it has to be and I want to avoid construction or anything that will slow me down.
Also, I'm thinking it will be a pretty freakin' hot ride so I'm planning on leaving Bakersfield around 3:30 AM to avoid some heat. I know I'll be on the road during the heat of the day but at least it'll be cool early. I'd rather not make the ride over night so that's not an option. Any opinions?
I appreciate any help/advice with this stretch of the ride. Or for that matter the route back. I don't have a plan other than visiting Brice and Zion canyons.
