Cool Through the fog to ride the little dragon on New Years Day...

The Central Valley of California is known for fog in the winter. Today was no exception. My strategy was to get up in the hills ASAP and try to get above the weather for a New Years Day ride. After about an hour of punching through the mist I busted through to sunshine, and made my way to the top of the little dragon, a patch of hwy 49 named after the tail of the dragon. The fog poured over the mountain peaks here and there and I found myself alternating between glorious blue skies and dense overcast.

Much of hwy 49 is sanded and unfortunately I found the little dragon also heavily sanded as there has been frost on the roads. It will be spring before it's worth riding again in the mountains. Oh well, lots of fun roads down in the valley until then.

Hornitas Road with the fog rolled in.

The consolation is the green starting to come back...

Close to Bass Lake and the fog gives way to blue sky...

Little dragon with the fog in the distance but rolling in fast...

the twisties look delicious but sand in the corners spoiled the meal. Still had fun...

So I've got my first 200+ miles under my belt for 2009. Anybody else?

I did a little over 300 miles for our New Years Day Run. It wasn't anywhere as beauty as yours. 32 of us met in Waco, TX at the Hooters which is pretty much an equidistant point for many of the riders, but a boring ride. The company was great, though and we spent many hours laughing it up.

Looked like a great place to ride aside from the sanded roads. No cages around make it even better. Happy New Year!!! Here in Jersey our roads are full of salt and sand, bummer!! Grif, nice photo!
