15 Major Swiss passes and 1300kms in 2 days ( lots of pics)

Hi there,

I've been lurking here for months but not posted yet. I bought my GT after 8 years of riding a Honda CBR1100XX Super Blackbird. Never had any problems but the wife started to find it uncomfortable, so we bought the BM.

I rode 18000kms in less than 6 months, and thought I'd share this story and pics as I see several of you here are thinking of, or are interested in European touring. So, here is my pictorial tale of 1300kms, and 15 Swiss passes, including the second highest pass in Europe, the Stelvio at 2754m. Hope you enjoy the pics!

Less then one week after returning from my 4000km tour in Andorra, Spain and Auvergne, I spent two fantastic days on my GT, riding with a friend (Z1000), touring major Swiss passes. Here is where we went:

Grimsel 1759m, Susten 2724m, Oberalp 21044m, Lockmanier 1914m, San Bernadino 2065m, Julier 2284m, Bernina 2328m
First day toal distance 684kms, riding time approx. 9.5 hours

Gletsch

Coffee stop before ascending the Grimesel

View from Gletsch towards the Furkka

The Sustenpass- Probably one of my favourite Swiss passes due to great scenery and mega views

The Lockmanier

The San Bernadino

Silvaplana

Julierpass

Bernina

DAY 2:
Stelvio 2760m, Umbrail 2501m, Fuorn 2149m, Fluela 2383m, Wolfgang 1831m, Oberalp 2044m, Gotthard 2108m, Neufenen 2478m.

Days riding 616kms Riding time 9 hours 10 approx.

Conveniently numbered turns

Looking back direction Bormio

Bormio to Stelvio

Some of the 48 hairpins looking down from summit of the Stelvio

Some of the most famous bends in Europe

Descending the Umbrail

Looking down to Andermatt

From this position he can watch for speeders leaving Andermatt

Bear rides motorbike!!

Gotthard looking down to Airolo

Top of the Neufenen

Short rest before descent of the Neufenen and a boring motorway trek home

HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE PICS!

15 passes tour

The tour was at the end of August last year. Most passes are above 2000m, and September is about the latest it is possible to cross at this altitude, as snow falls and closes them, with many not re-opening until May the following year!

If I can help with any advice feel free to pm me. I've ridden virtually every Swiss pass and most of the French too, having lived here since 1999. If you ride over here I can guarantee you'll love every minute!

Ciao

Paul
