Where to?

My son and I plan camping trips and rides months in advance because our schedules almost never match. Besides, it's much easier to talk to the wife and say, "honey, you know this has been planned for three months... I can't back out on him now".

Anyway, son and I want to take a day-long trip somewhere, spend the night, and come back the next day. We settled on the weekend of October 10-11 because it has Columbus Day the following Monday. I live in Anaheim and he lives in the San Diego area. We're thinking, Grand Canyon(?), San Francisco(?), Yosemite(?). Any ideas from you guys on what would be a good trip considering that time of year?

Chuck's trip

Chuck,

I've ridden in the King's Canyon area in early October and the riding was great, no tourists.

I took the 15 to the 138/14 cut off toward Lancaster. Then the 58 through Tehachapi. Then left on Comanche to Halfway house left again to 65 and North to 198. It will take you through 3 Rivers and into the National Parks.

Great roads and scenery. Very doable in a weekend from SoCal.

twocents,

Keep a high visual horizon,
Bob

Not that I have anything against ohio but I was liking the national forest idea a tad bit better.

Over-nighter at Wuksachi Village in Sequoia N.P north of Lodgepole. Also, Wuksachi has an excellent dining area and small bar (wait until you try their "Triple Divide" fillet special!). Rates may be a lot cheaper then as it's off season. Could even sneak a short ride into King's Canyon in the AM or prior evening, eat lunch there at the snack bar, and then ride back through Ten-Mile Road through Hume Lake on the way out if they haven't snow closed the area (i.e. usually 190 into King's Canyon. The rest of General's Highway is usually open via plows).

Gets mighty cool in the shade of the redwoods so dress accordingly.

I like this too. Thanks MadMax. We need to map this and talk about it.
