I-5 thru LA?

I haven't driven in LA for many years and am looking for advice. I plan on coming down I-5 on Sunday and figure I should be hitting LA mid-afternoon. Heading for Laguna Beach and I'm wondering if I should skirt around to the east or just plow through on I-5. At our end of I-5 on a Sunday, it is a piece of pavement I avoid as the traffic can be gnarly stop and go for miles and miles. Suggestions?

Every other month I come down the I-5 from Sacramento on Friday afternoon, and LA is a parking lot. Hate it. Don't know about Sunday, maybe someone who lives up there can be more helpful, but I suspect that Sunday afternoon wouldn't be too bad.

L.A. Run-Thru

Darrel;
A possible alternative once you pass hwy 14 cutoff is to hook up with the Foothill (210) fwy east. It has HOV lanes most of the way to the Cost Mesa (57) fwy south where you can rejoin the 5. It is a short hop then to the Laguna (133) fwy. This is a little longer than a straight shot thru downtown, but you avoid many potential hold ups. L.A. is always a fun trip. Enjoy.

I'm finding weekend traffic around santa monica/LA is insane. I've come down the I-5 once from monterey, crazy SUV drivers weaving thru HEAVY traffic, one ace nearly wacked me when he crosse the hov lane lines before your supposed to at over 100 mph. I made sure he knew i was right behind him for a looongggg way I love the headlites on the KS

I think the go-around advice is well taken but hey, you can always split lanes, assuming your on the bike.

EJ, I like the look of that route and think I'll give it a try. I'm leaving in the morning and hope to spend some of Saturday playing on 96 in NorCal.
Thanks for the comments.

Darrell;
Have a great ride, but like someone else said, watch those nuts who cross over the double yellows without regard for those already in the HOV lane.
