Hwy 74 to 243?

Coming back to the well of local knowledge again. I'm leaving around noon today from Laguna Beach and heading to Indio to visit friends. Is the road up and over the Santa Rosa Mountains bike friendly? Of course I am up to any suggestions on how to get from the coast to Indio. Suggestions or information appreciated.

The Ortega Highway (74) is a nice ride, but it's not known for being particularly bike friendly, law enforcement-wise. Be careful with the speeds. Double fine area. There's been some construction going on over the past few weeks, but I think that's all done now. There's a look-out point with a little disreputable cafe near the summit overlooking Lake Elsinore where you can stop and have a coke and a cigar. Parking lot is dirt and gravel, so be careful there too. When you get down into Lake Elsinore, you will come to a T intersection. Turn left, follow the road around to the other side until you come to another T, then turn right. You will see the I-15 off to your left and it will be obvious from there. Have a safe ride.
