Helmet Camera Notes

Helmet Cam DIY Information

This is a brief how-to doc, intended to help you put together your own Motorcycle Helmet-Camera Kit.
Basically, a quality helmet camera setup consists of a camera-cables-camera power-dvr-memory.
There are kits galore out there, BUT every kit I have seen has individual components that can be a compromise - so I put together some of the best bang-for-the-buck parts, to make it easy for people.

Camera Option 1 - land use only
-------------------------------------
I have seen 3 or 4 different bullet cameras, but the Sony ExView seems to be the one to use. I have it, and love it.
So, your camera should be the Sony ExView. I have the 520-line version.
The key is getting one with a water-proof connector.

These 2 places sell the camera itself, a couple of mounts, a AA battery power supply for the camera, and cables, for $150.

The sh-gin place has a really nice looking setup, and the cedigital is a close 2nd.

Camera Option 2 - land and water use
-------------------------------------------------
If you want to use your camera underwater also (like I have done), then you need to purchase your camera with an IP-68 connector.
HelmetCameras.com has that covered for $180 for just the camera:

If you get a camera with an IP-68 connector, then you need to cable it to your DVR and/or Microphone.
My favorite setup is a modular cable setup.
You would need 3 cables - try Sport Shots:
http://www.sportzshot.com/cables.php#

The Modular AV Harness: PVS-6CABLE-AV
An IP-68 Extension Cable - 1.2 meters: PVS-6EXT-5
A Microphone for sound: PVS-6MIC

And power for the IP-68 connected camera from HelmetCameras.com.

Power Options:
8 AA Battery Pack (totally portable power for camera only)
12Vdc Auto Power Plug (unlimited power from your cig lighter)

Protective Camera Mount
--------------------------------
I haven't crashed with my helmet cam, but I did have a rock whack the camera at 80mph, and dropped the helmet once with the camera on it - neither are good.

Helmetcamera.com also has an aluminum, crush-proof mount that is the ultimate protection for your camera.

If you get this awsome mount, get the Fastening Strip as well to mount the camera - super velcro, basically.

Also, they have a bunch of other mounting options - glasses, baseball cap, a neoprene cap, a metal rotating mount, etc..

DVR
-----
Next up, the Digital Video Recorder - DVR. This should be small, with A/V inputs and output, and should have no moving parts in it - meaning it should record to a MicroSD type of card.
Preferably, it should handle large cards - 16gb at least.

These 2 seem to fit the bill for $150 or so....

I like the securitycamera2000 unit the best - 16gb microsd capable, remote control, and will work with a 2.4ghz wireless camera - options are always good. Looks easy to power from a 12v cigarette lighter if available/needed.

Fanny Pack
-----------
You might want a fanny pack to carry all of this crap around.
HelmetCameras.com has a nice pack for $14.
Or just get any fanny pack you want, big enough to hold all this stuff.
They even make waterproof fanny packs.

Waterproof DVR Box
-------------------
Again, helmetcamera.com comes thru with 2 different boxes that hold your DVR AND have a waterproof entry for your IP-68 cable from the sony bulletcam.
http://www.helmetcamera.com/acart/ag...?p_id=B1&xm=on - something like $60 or so.
