New K1300S

Just bought a new K1300S (my first BMW motorcycle). Absolutely incredible bike...the only thing I'm mad about is that I waited so long to get one.

I have a question for you guys. I noticed that I'm getting very light scratches on my windscreen when I use paper-towels to wash off bugs (even though I've been very gentle). Any suggestions on the best way to clean and maintain the windscreen (and light cover)?

First thing you need to do is get rid of the paper towels, those'll scratch every time.

Then, get on down to your local Harley/ Buell dealer and buy you some Novus #1,
plastic clean and shine. It's all I use on my helmets faceshield. It'll cost you maybe
$5.00 for an 8 oz. pump spray bottle. Then, get you a microfiber cloth from WalMart or your local auto parts store for wiping it off.

Thanks...that's very helpful. Is there anything that I can do (other than replace the windscreen) to remove the scratches?

Plexus is a plastic polish that will help remove the marks if they are not too deep/bad. It is available at most bike shops and or aviation supply stores. Paper towels BAD . Ripping a leg off the wifes/girlfriends flannel pj's....GOOD.
Have fun with the new ride!

Other suggestions...
If you ever get bird droppings (especially sea birds like gulls) and heavy bug squashes, soak the messed area with water thoroughly and very lightly wipe off with extremely soft towel. If you can keep the water flowing steadily down the windscreen even better. Just let the weight of towel/soft cloth move the material off... no hand pressure. Reason: Many birds consume sand with diet and bugs can have hard exoskeletons. Wiping back and forth with hand pressure can use that hard material to cut right into plastic or paint finishes. I had to have a whole section of an auto trunk redone because of crab shells/sand mixed in with sea gull droppings because I had never lived along the coast before. That event has made me aware of being extra careful on any kind of finish.

If you're out riding for day or on trip and your faceshield/windscreen needs a cleaning. Don't use the paper towels in public restrooms; wadded up and soaked toilet tissue is far less destructive. And you can always carry water-soaked (or presoaked with glass cleaner) & dry microfiber cloths in 2 separate plastic baggies in your pockets.

Maguiar's PlastX

Has anyone tried Meguiar's PlastX for removing light scratches from the windscreen?

Have had pretty much the same experience here on the Left coast as Sheep has. I use Plexus when I goof up and forget. It comes in several different levels, heavy scratch 3, light scratch 2, and polish 1. Great for lots of plastic and carbonate stuff. I will often take a large wrag towel, soak it and lay it over the screen and front body work. Let it hang out for a while and soften things up, then gently wipe away the gooo...(When I read the part about paper towels and plastic to my wife, she was ready to come over and knock some sense into Doubledown.....)

Tried Meguiar's PlastX a couple of times. Seemed to work GREAT the first time, for some reason not so well the second time. Could be an application issue, but it did work well the first time. There are a boatload of plastic polishes out there, plexus, novus, brillinize. all do basically the same thing, at least the watery types do. Then there are the SLIGHTLY abrasive ones, like novus 2, that are for deeper scratches. You follow them with the watery ones as a finish. I've even used Simichrome on plastic when things got really bad.

Now: K1300S Lava Orange
Then: R1100s, CBR929RR, YZF 600, Triumph Sprint ST, VFR750, K75S, GS1150E, GS550E, GS750E, KZ550, GT 380
