Rear drive failure question

Hi

I know there were many discussions on this topic. The bike I purchased recently (2006 K1200S) has reportedly had the rear drive flange replaced (the new redesigned one). the old/original one was reportedly prone to premature wear and failure. The cost to the previous owner was over $2500 including labour. This was done at 18K miles and the bike is now at 23K miles. I assume the rear drive oil must have been replaced at that time. My question is, when should I next replace the rear drive oil again?

hmmmm not really a Failure discussion....

I believe the newer version...1300S is slated for FD fluid at 12,000 miles, but you can find all the relevant maintenance/service schedules here:

I change my oil every 5k miles and the FD fluid every other oil change (10k). Its easier to keep track of

I had a word with my technician this morning about exactly the same thing, the "idea" of a "Lifetime maintenance free FD" is only possible if the oil they filled it with in the first place came from Hogwarts and was signed by Harry Potter himself. NO oil lasts for ever. He suggested we change the FD oil around every 20000Km (10000 Miles). It is a labour intensive task, but like the saying goes.. "Oil is cheaper than a mechanic'
