Refitting a clutch

Has anyone fitted a new clutch to a 1200s? is there a knack to putting the clutch back together, as i am really struggling. I am trying to put the clutch basket back in with the full set of plates in the basket,, but it is very tight and the first 2 plates keep falling out. I have made sure the plates are lined up with small tap pointing towards the small tab location.
Thanks in advance.
Martin
