New owner of '06; need trans repair advice.
Shortest version is I am almost sure (have to pull tranny to be sure, and not willing to pay dealer to do it just yet, and will pull it myself shortly) I have the well-documented-here transmission dog failure (2d gear only, and only under heavy load, 1/4 -second or so power interruption) on a 3/í06 mfg. date K1200S on which I am the 3rd owner, 24k mi., and am considering my options, from buying a salvage trans (and likely just buying the same, repeatable problem), to trying to negotiate with BMW to cover part of the costs, since itís a known design defect, to trying to find someone who rebuilds them (tons of people rebuild the R trans, but not many the Ks), to trying to learn how to do it myself.
Just paying full $3.5k for a brand-new gen-1 trans (pre-8/06 mfg. date; the gen 2s are over $4k, so what a bargain!) and having dealer install at 100%, full price is not an option, as I only paid about $4.6k for the bike itself, and I donít see paying more than the value of the whole bike just to fix the trans.
1. As the third owner on a 12 year old bike with 24k miles, I donít expect BMW to be especially receptive to the idea of letting me have a new trans at their cost, but does anyone have ideas on how to ďtalkĒ to them about it, or how to start the contact process, other than through the dealer? I had been toying with the idea of buying a new (vs. used) R1200RT; does anyone think it would be worth my time to float the idea to ask if I buy a new one, they might be willing to give me a K12S trans at cost as part of the deal?
2. Anyone know a guy who rebuilds not too old, not too new, K transmissions?
Thanks in advance for any advice you fine folks can give me.
NOTE: for those on the bmwmoa.org forums, I am indeed the guy who was initially stumped by this due to the fact I had fueling issues which mimicked the bucking, but was resolved entirely in all gears but second after replacing the fuel pump; no help from also replacing the electronic sending unit to the fuel pump; and no other codes thrown by the ECU.
