shipping a m/c 101

I am considering shipping my bike out west next summer (maybe Spokane, WA), doing a trip out there and driving it back home (upstate NY). I am looking for logistical info as well carrier recommendations and cost. Also, opinions on this method vs renting a bike and flying both ways.

Thanks.

I can vouch for renting being expensive..

I did a 3 day rental at a place in the SF Bay are which will remain nameless. Bike (1200GS) was perfect in every way except for the gigantic "I'm a rental!" decals all over it.

It was $159 a day, plus tax, plus dropoff fee, etc. etc. (they nickel & dime you to death) which turned into 600 bucks. Then I snagged my boot hook over the passenger seat and tore it about a quarter of an inch. They charged me the cost of a new passenger seat which was 180 bucks!! A very expensive 3 day weekend.

I've heard you can ship your bike across the country for $500 or so... Several companies do it and I would recommend that before renting.

Regards,

Tom.

I used Federal to ship a bike from Chicago to my home town. They are a unit of Allied and were fast. I could follow the truck online and those boys didn't waste any time. Think it was 5 or 600 dollars. Can't help you with rental as I have never done it. If I had the time available, would ship it and drive it back. There are an amazing amount of great roads out here.
