Arrow Average speed ?

Any thought out there on an average speed that can be expected or maintained on say a 500 mile road trip driving legal limits or slightly above, say 70 mph and making gas and rest stops? my experience in the past suggests just above 55mph.
I'd like to hear from others......

Thanks;
Dave

Depending on how many stops you make for fuel and how well you can combine fuel/food stops I think your estimate is about right. Generally when I plan a longer trip I try to plan on about 400 miles per day on the highway. I get about 200 miles per tank so I ride from about 9 am until just after noon, stop for lunch and fuel and then ride about 3-4 hours in the afternoon and stop for the night. If I am trying to get more miles in I can get back on the bike and ride another 200 or so but putting out repetitive 600 -800 mile days can make the trip less enjoyable for me.

Thats interesting.......I would have thought your average speed to be higher, so many factors to consider though.....but i guess GPS's don't lie

I just returned from a 4,821 mile loop from New Orleans to Salt Lake City, Yellowstone, Deadwood South Dakota, Arkansas and home trip. The average out west was about 63 mph. Coming back through Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma et al it was 60.8mph. That's the moving average. The overall was 48 mph. I use and love my Zumo.

average speed

Average speed really plummets every time you stop. Based on this I would have guessed in the 40's myself.

That's about what I average in a cage. I don't ride in straight lines.....

How's that for a first post?....

Years ago on slower bikes and on group rides, we always seemed to average 29.8 mph with the stops added in.

Don't know why, but we all calculated our trips at the end of the day by old-school math and came out with the same answers.

Riding solo, the mph gained quite a bit: upper 30's to lower 40's.
