2009 GT…just an observation

I posted this on a sister site…………

Today I went in to a BMW dealership. They have the 09 GT there…in orangey red. Yuk. And the side vent makes the GT look as if the side panel was made in China. Looks like "IT WILL" fall at the first washing. Yes, the new vents makes the 2009 GT cheap looking when sitting next to a 2008 GT. Especially the controls. The old controls look like a work of art. Simply beautiful. The New controls helps contribute to the cheap look.

Though the Dealer offered me a test ride on the 2008 GT and RT and the 2009 GT next week when the Demo arrives, I decided to just sit on them instead. It was my lunch hour.

The dealer admitted with out prompting that the biggest change he experience with his 2009 GT test ride was that the on / off abrupt throttle response was eliminated. The trade off was the ugly controls (he, he, ha, ha, giggle, giggle….snort). Wasn’t funny to me. Oh…and the handgrips are much smaller too. A lot smaller.

He (dealer) stated that the control were changed to the “Asian” style as a marketing tool to attract more of the younger crowd. His words (while rolling his eyes)…”As if these kids would actually trade in their $10,000 bike for one costing $22,000.”

As much as I love the RT, I’ll have to say that the riding position with the GT was a better fit. Slight lean with the feet an a perfect angle. Almost similar to my naked SV650….which I still miss dearly.

The RT was still a slight lean…not as much as the GT, but at the angle MY VStrom was prior to getting bar backs due to upper shoulder pains. I did not like the foot position of the RT. That along made the RT uncomfortable.

My next step is a ride on all three models, 2008 RT, 2008 GT and 2009GT and render a verdict then. I’m sure with foot peg re-placements that the RT will be the more comfortable than the GT, though I do believe the GT is not uncomfortable. Didn't notice a weight difference...though the fat front end of the RT made it appera huge.

Anyway…just wanted to vent because I’m so confused about what I want.

Given the deal you can probably wrangle on the '08 GT I think it will come down to the two '08s.

There is a listed $8000 OTD difference between the 08GT and 09GT.

Do you have one zero too many in the OTD??
Even so, it would be too much of a price increase in this economy.

Ok, clarification. I was a little excited. I meant to hit the “5” instead of the “8” and without my reading glasses it looks the same to me. But didn't bother to correct it after the PM. Yes I'm lazy.

It’s not $8,000. The price listed on the two was $5000. 08 $17K, 09 $22K. I was just in there again today. After Tax and fees and licenses that would put the difference closer to ~$5,480. Ok...I'm an idiot.

OK then, you are an idiot. I just knew $8 grand was too much of a difference. I could see the $5500 difference to move out the previous year. So far I have purchased 3 BMM's over the years and all have had a savings of at least $5K.

A test drive of the GT and RT will quickly make the decision easier. I was torn between the 2 also, but after riding each for 20 minutes, the choice was a no brainer for me.
