A Declaration

Guys, Ive been sitting on this for days and cant do it any longer.
Last Thursday, after too many sittings of Long way round and Long way down, I bought an R1200GSA.
I had been toying with the idea of getting an older R1150GSA and playing with it for a while to see if I could get into the dirt track thang.
I dropped in to see a mate on Thursday who runs a Honda store to buy a back protector from him and there in the used lot was an 07 GSA.
Thing is, being a Honda dealer, he didnt know a GS from a GSA and when I asked him what it owed him it was obvious it had been traded as a GS.
A quick test ride and a confirmation that I could buy it for what it owed him and the pen went to paper.
It gets delivered tomorrow to join the GT in the garage and will hopefully add another dimension to my weekends.
If it turns out to be not for me, I think Ill get out with a chance of making a $ but probably wont burn any.
I just need to start practicing that Charlie Boorman accent and Wheelie technique.

Jeez some blokes have all the luck. I have been thinking about doing the same up here as the roads leave much to be desired in the excitement department but I am led to believe there is a lot of excellent off road stuff here. Congrats on the pick up though. If that bloke trades another let me know.

I presume you will be doing the GS safari from here on as well.

Cheers

Its funny John, this years GS Safari is in Tas. and starts in Melbourne the day that I will be leaving Devonport to come home on the GT.
In short, YES, if I get into the whole dirt track thing I think the Rallies should be more interesting than some of the highway miles that we had to do on the last TS rally. The run down the Palmer into Cairns excluded.

Well Dan the floods have mainly subsided close to the coast so now the clean up begins.
unfortunately the fire situation isnt as pretty. There are still a number of uncontrolled fires burning with higher temperatures predicted for this week. Some more towns were advised that they had until last night to evacuate or be prepared to stay and fight.
I have a ride planned for next month that will take me to the southern extremes of Australia and one of the points of interest I was looking forward to was a place called "Wilsons Promontory" which is a beautiful piece of national park that juts out into the southern ocean. I got news on the weekend that it is currently ablaze so Ill probably only get to see the forests as scorched matchsticks.
Obviously my plan up to now has been to take the GT, now its eenie, meenie?

The GS and GSA are good bikes for Long Way Round and Long Way Down type runs IF you wish to stay with BMW. But for comfort, toughness, cost and reliability there are better choices out there.

For long distance touring I believe BMW makes the best rides available. However on Way Round and Down run when you can't rely on a "Support Crew" with spare parts and a spare bike, it would be less stressful to ride something that a average 15 year old mechanic can repair or fabricate a replacement part for. Something to think about while in the middle of Mongolia when that clutch goes out.

Thanks for the Heads Up Xavier.
I dont disagree, but having a clutch fail in Mongolia is as likely to happen to me as Angelina Jolie humming on my nuts.
I had a brief ride of this thing yesterday with the right pressure in the tyres (test rode at 20F/28R) and i really like it. Its got a new set of Conti Attack road tyres on it at the moment and Ive gotta say its very surprising in a corner. It doesnt have anything like the grunt of the GT but it puts me into license suspension speeds soon enough.
Central Africa will only ever be seen by me from a Landrover with a large gun handy but as for having some fun on 2 wheels, I think the next chapter of motorcycling for me will be fun.

+1 on Africa in a land rover. I've ridden the alp's and the dolemites but I don't have a desire to ride in third world countries and worry about getting robbed or killed.
