Up-grade my radar detector

I am currently using an older Beltronics Cordless 946 that I have hard wired and use an earphone and would like to up-grade. I want to keep the price in the $150.00 to very low $200's preferably with a corded or wireless earphone( as an option). What units are popular now?

The most popular radar detectors are the V1 and the Escort Passport which are both out of your price range. Personally I wouldn't waste the money on a cheap detector (again). If I were you I would hold off and save up some more money to get a really good detector. I use the V1 and it is a great detector that is worth the money to me.

Agree with Sharkbait. Might try eBay too for a used V1 or Escort.

Escort does have some trade-in program if you check their website where you can get $80 or so for your old unit. Might pay to look into it. I saw in some mag where they have a new Escort Redline that supposedly has a range of 13 miles which I find hard to believe.

I've got two Escort 9500ix units (car and bike) and they rock! Nothing like a little situational awareness in some states like Arizona with all their silly speed and red light cams and odd wavering speed zones to fool you into getting caught on one. I saw where they made 90 million dollars on the things in one year. Nice. No doubt other states will pick up the ball too.

Escort have a factory outlet store on e-bay.

Their refurbished Passport 8500 X50 units are excellent, and a bargain at $199.99

Just bought a new Beltronics vector 995 for $209.99 delivered.
I'll get it about a week and I'll let you know how it works.

Those refurbished Escorts on the eBay store looked good for $199, but only have a 6mos. warranty. And you really don't know which version x50 you were getting
I was sorely tempted!

13 miles??? Wouldn't it be constantly going off? For crying out loud, I don't need to know about radar traps on the other freeway across the city.

I have to second (or third) Sharkbait and GMack. Personally I upgraded to a V1 several years ago and I have not regretted spending the extra money. I ran it along side several units (Beltronics & Uniden) and was very impressed. Considering one ticket can make up the cost difference (and it doesn’t cause your insurance to go up!) I'd say its worth the money.

Probably on some flat straight-away in middle of Nevada.

Their website makes some note of it here too:
Speed Measurement Labs
"...vicious performance on the 13 mile long range test."

Escort's Redline link here.

Still, it does seem a bit much distance wise. Most I've seen is about 3 miles on the 9500ix on a straight at night south of Marysville, CA where the CA CHP breaks in the rookies out of their Sacramento academy. In town the range is probably dampened a lot. Can't have enough "Situational awareness" imho.

I'd also get that retired N.Y.S.P cop James Eagan's book from Aerostitch called "The Speeder's Guide to Avoiding Tickets" too. Lot's of neat stuff in it that you never think about; like speeding in the right-most lane due to cosine error where 1 MPH could mean life or death on an approaching cop's radar or laser (e.g. His tolerance setting on radar shows 69 MPH and you get a Pass; whereas 70 MPH and you are Toast in his book.).

Fwiw, I don't know why retired cops have some sort of epiphany and get into a business that seems counter to what they did for a living like writing a book on speeding. Then you have Radar Roy of http://www.radardetector.net who sells/sold radar detectors and jammers. Some cop out of Las Vegas, Chuck Lee (?), owns a large cathouse (Sheri's Ranch) in Pahrump, NV. And we have several local ones that own bars the ABC seems to ignore on inspection raids. Very odd. Eagan says "The government could mandate 'No vehicles can could go over 70 MPH', but they do not want that! It keeps the legal bureaucracy in the money-making business" so he says.

Absolutely nothing (if you own one can I be your friend?)
