Hate to tell you, but most Harley rider's don't know what the signal is. I hang around the local Harley shop maybe too much and I've asked some of them about it. Probably don't know because they don't go fast - and even slower in groups. I've gotten the "Hand patting the ground to slow down
" gesture from a Harley guy on Hwy. 96 in Northern CA once. I've also gotten the "Hand on the helmet
" pat signal from sport bike riders more often.
Oddly, the Harley sales guy told me to figure that most Harley rider's are "Novice riders and don't know much"
(His words). I remember when BMW made that boxer cruiser in '97-'98. I took one from the local BMW dealer and rode it over to the Harley shop. Some of the Harley guys actually thought it was a Harley Springer and that I had placed BMW Roundels on it for fun. Novices indeed!
Oh, the BMW dealer got all upset when I told him I parked the BMW on the street in front of the Harley shop. He thought he would get a call from the Harley shop owner telling him to "Keep the damn BMW's away from his shop!"
Didn't happen. Still doesn't.
Most you can do to keep the meter maids off you is a good long-range detector like the new Escort Redline, an aerial (Leo-in-the-Air) detection unit, and maybe a Croatian-made laser jammer too. Situational awareness is a virtue. Lots of the CHP motorcycle officers PACE since they can accelerate faster on the BMW Patrol models and not hit the Stalker Radar button and give themselves away.
Fwiw, a cook at a restaurant in Chico, CA told me his last ticket for doing 68 MPH on a 65 MPH stretch of Hwy. 99 through town cost him $300. State needs the money to keep all the cops, court clerks, lawyers, and judges employed. Feds have added a lot of grant money to the state for overtime to bring in more money. Our town has tow truck operators ($700,000/year!) even fighting at board meetings for exclusivity-calls for tow-away federal monies now.
