Newbie

I'm looking to buy a K series BMW. I've never owned one but have ridden a few boxers. I always wanted a K series though. I know very little about these bikes and as I'm going to dip my toe in at first to see if this is something I still enjoy so will be looking at used first.

I'd like to know if there are any years or models to avoid and why? I'm interested in late 90' to mid 2000 decade. How different is the flat four to the slant four? When did the change occur. Why do you think one is better than the other? I'm not interested in the LT's as I'm not ready for the rolling arm chair set yet but may be in a few years. What are the differences in models? Probably wont do more than 500 miles in a day for now and that's after I work into it.
So I'd appreciate any thoughts or comments even if it's just p**s off. Thanks

I've posted a number of times about my 93 K75S. All positive.

My previous experience with BMWs was limited to the airhead boxer twins that I still ride. While looking for a daily commuter I spoke with a club member about the flying bricks and decided to look for one locally. He described the engine as being more like that of a car than what I was used to with my boxer twins. This led me to read all I could find about maintenance and any specific problems with the various models. I did find one on Craig's list with just over 40K, Sargent seat, Race Tech fork springs and Progressive shock in good condition with inoperative ABS needing some regular maintenance. I do all my own maintenance so I figured all fluid replacement and new tires in the cost and began my research in ABS repair. The deal was struck and I hauled it home.

I've found this bike to be a pleasure to ride with an almost perfect riding position for my 5'11" frame and long arms. The summer commute on a busy urban highway can bring on the heat when the fan kicks earning it the "K-bake" moniker. The ABS has been repaired and I've shared my troubleshooting and repair process in earlier posts.

The real test was just completed, a 4300 mile trip to the midwest and back with a couple of 400 mile days and one 500+. The only issue was a burned out taillight bulb on the way back. Almost 50 mpg and now with over 62K on the clock still a pleasure to ride.

No regrets.
