Over heating

Picked up my new K1200rs (2003) on Monday. Love this bike. On the way home I had to slow down to a crawl in heavy traffic near the Byron Bay exit. Well the temperature slowly went up and up and up, to almost red when I got moving again and the temp. went back down. So my question is, at what point do the thermo fans kick in and cool things back down again? On my last bike a Ducati st2 the temperature would climb to 115 out of 120 before the fans kicked in. Is the k the same or is there a problem with it.

My fans come on at the 3/4 gauge mark. You need to put the bike on the center stand and leave it to idle for 15 minutes until the fans come on. Then check both fans are actually working. You can also look at each radiator to make sure the airflow is not blocked with crud.
