Dealer pricing parts above retail

Not sure if anyone has come across this or not, but my local dealer charges about 8% above retail cost for BMW parts, as seen in the microfiche. I've called a few other dealers and they charge retail.

Has anyone seen this before and is it legal to do so?

Yep, it is legal, but if they are an official BMW dealer, they should charge retail, not higher. Not illegal but bad form.

You can't stop them. But maybe BMW might think it is bad for relationships. I'd contact BMW USA and complain about it. My dealer actually charges less than retail Chicago BMW was well known for discounted parts and they were taken over by most of the same people for a new dealership.

If you are referring to the online fishe prices like(Max BMW) those prices are not always what is set by BMW. When I order parts from my local dealer they are rarely the same, usually cheaper. Being in the BMW parts business for over 30 years BMW is constantly shrinking the dealers margin so a lot of them take their cost time a certain percentage so they can actually make some money. Lastly dealers getting weekly price changes as well.

I think dealer prices are far too high anyway. I shop around for the lowest price, is that illegal? If I can use aftermarket generics like bearings and seals I go to a bearing and seal specialist. If I need tires or a battery I buy online at the lowest price I can get for a quality brand. If I need riding gear I'm not bothered about having the BMW branding (which I think they should pay me for wearing) and I buy from the quality aftermarket vendors. If a BMW part fails sooner than I expected, I might re-design it or buy better.

Now I know there is a kind of honor feeling about buying from a local dealer, particularly if they are the only one in your area for miles. But they will be exploiting their monopoly situation so I feel entitled to use the same market buying principles as the dealers and get best price, Even though I am in U.K, I watch Euro exchange rates and if there is something I need I can wait for, I will buy across borders from Europe. The internet is a great tool for Buyers.

I decided when I first got my K1200RS that I would own my bike and not BMW.
