Internal work on EAS shock absorbers

After reading a shootout between the new GT and the Yamaha and Honda cruisers ,the BMW lost out due to more harsh suspension ride ,I was wondering if anyone has had any internal work done on OEM ESA shock absorbers. I know that OEM BMW shock absorbers are meant to be unrebuildable ,but surely some specialists are still able to rebuild them. I was thinking that a revalve (they do have normal valve stacks dont they?) or a lighter oil might smooth things out a bit. Has anyone had any internal work done on ESA shock absorbers? If not ,is there any news on when Ohlins will have a rebuildable/adjustable ESA shock absorber out?

I believe "Works" is the company that builds the shock as OEM. I didn't read the article, so I can't comment on the tone of the report. Odd, though, that as the shock is adjustable on-the-fly, why they didn't set it for a more soft ride (unless they had it at the softest setting).

Do Honda and Yamaha offer an ESA option? If not, did they bypass the BMW option for a more level playing field?

The older BMW shocks, built by Showa, aren't made to be easily rebuildable. Costs are cheaper that way. There are a few folks here in the San Francisco Bay Area, though, that will rebuild them for you anyway. More expensive than shocks that are designed to be rebuilt, however.

This is interesting to me. I have not seen the article you mention, but as a former ST1300 owner, I can say that yes, I think that bike does ride "softer" that the GT. But it also can be induced to wallow in sweepers and the suspension overall can be a little less settled and compliant than the GT. In fact, the solid feel of the GT was a bigger factor in my purchase decision than the engine or other amenities. For me at least, I feel more secure at speed and definitely more in control in any given situation on the GT. This is not a knock on the ST1300 as I thought it was an excellent bike overall, and I have never ridden the Yamaha. Curious cnclusions though.

this topic was discussed on i-bmw a few weeks ago and according to someone that responded to the thread the ESA shocks are not rebuildable and will set you back almost 3 grand for replacements. there was also talk of olin or wilbur making a esa replacement shock that would replace the OEM, not sure how accurate or factual the info is. i'm hoping someone comes up with a better cheaper alternative than paying almost 3 grand for shocks. i love the ESA feature but if I have to pay 3 grand to replace the shocks i might as well put that towards a down payment on a non ESA bike.
