system cases cooking

I have read hereon at various times about riders having trouble with melting left panniers etcetera..

Club service day today and I was looking at an identical KRS parked next to mine. Both as supplied by the little elves in Bavaria.

I could see my left case was far closer to the exhaust than the other bikes, not room to put my fingers through.

Would appear that my rear exhaust hanger is bent more than the other bikes, his was straighter allowing more room between tyre and system case.

Will have to remove said hanger and make adjustment, after checking that the exhaust permits such movement.

yes

that case get's hot! I have an '04 GT and the stuff in the case cooks very well. I've been thinking about putting some raw eggs and cheese in a ziplock and seeing if I could make an omellette.

Nothing has been damaged when in the case so far but I'm thinking it gets 140 or so degrees F. I can still touch the case so it's not 180.

Let us know how the adjustment affects the temp.

Best,

Gravity

Cooking case

I bought a '98 K1200RS three weeks ago and just did a 1000 miler to from Los Angeles to Sonoma County and back.

I noticed that my left system case also (very close to the muffler) had started to melt. Pretty upsetting. I will cruise it to the dealership where I purchased the bike (no warranty of course) and see what they have to say.

I took the muffler hanger off to see if I could move it , the muffler away from the case. Was no slack there so I did not force it. It has not been an issue so far, but I would prefer it hung dead centre between case and tyre

I have a trip to Reno coming up and the cases will be in use, so I'll be watching them closely. Should I have a similar experience with heat-related issues, I'll probably try something from Thermo-Tec on the case end, like say, one of their adhesive-backed heat barrier sheets.
