Exclamation My turn: QD failure

It was my turn for the infamous Quick-Disconnect failure. Rode home from work, pulled into driveway and smelled gasoline vapors. I looked down, and sure enough, the bike was pissing gas out the right side. The lower male QD had failed.

Fortunately, I had purchased the metal QD's from Omega a couple months ago, and had the repair completed in 30 minutes. I only replaced the male side, and it fit perfectly into the plastic female side, as was reported here on another thread.

I only ordered a single male / female pair, but I think I should at least get another male fitting in case the other QD fails. I won't replace the female QD's but will keep the one with me in case of a failure on the road. I don't believe a failure of the female QD is likely, as the crack appears to occur at a stress concentration point on the male side.

Folks, if you don't have a replacement metal QD's or barbed hose connectors, you better get some.

Replace both whole assemblies. It's not worth the few dollars savings.

Were you able to get the plastic off and scrub down the crankcase cover before it gets a gas stain on it?

I was not able to and have a small stain that is hidden by the plastic, but every time I see the stain, I get pissed at BMW for allowing the bean counters to take over the company!!

If you do a search on Omega Q/D, you get lots of hits. This one has part numbers and telephone info. Viton rings are subjectively the better option (based on just what I've read).

The QD's are located as shown in the photo. Although you can only see one in the photo, there are two of them.

If you had this problem fixed under warranty at the dealer...I wonder if they just went in and tightened things up?

There is no "tightening up" on a failed Q/D. Your dealer would replace the failed Q/D with a new plastic one. Mine was!
