Fuel filter moved outside of the tank

I once relocated a R1100RT fuel filter to the outside of the tank. This is my first K bike a 2003 K1200GT. Can the fuel filter on the K1200GT be moved to the out of the tank also? If so, will the fuel lines be reconnected the same as the RT? Where can I find instructions? Thanks for the help.

It's your call if you want to risk becoming a roman candle or making a quick fire escape from the bike.

The fuel system runs at a nominal regulated 60psi. The aluminium can isn't going to take enormous pressure, although I tested mine to 80psi just to make sure I wasn't putting in a faulty one.

However, as the yards of paper filter filter become more clogged so the input pressure can rise and some have measured over 150psi. The regultor on the bike is AFTER the fuel flter. Now you might be very careful and change your filter regularly.

But how would you feel about the prospect of the fuel filter splitting between your legs at this pressure and being sprayed by fuel?

I understand why BMW located the fuel filter inside the fuel cell. And if you think it's just the filter you replace, then remember there's also a gauze pickup strainer in there to check. The only way I'd ever consider externally mounting the filter is if I could add a small in-line pressure regulator set to about 80psi. Then if the filter really clogged the bike wouldn't run very well. Actually it's not a bad idea anyway, since you'd get early warning of a clogged filter, it could prevent a sustained pump overload and expensive failure. You win a few ounces of extra gas capacity with an external filter.
