Warranty Question

I may have located a GT for sale. The owner states he has performed all service himself (as oposed to bring it in for BMW regular recommended services) and is the original owner of the bike. This GT was purchased by him brand new from a dealership and there is still existing warranty.

Does this void the existing warranty at all? I don't doubt the sellers experience or competence with bikes, I am just curious about the warranty side of it.

Any thoughts?

Depends...assuming they can prove all necessary servicing was done, should not cause a warrenty concern. Does the owner have documentation for all service and inspections (you didn't mention how many miles are on the bike)? Documentation would include reciepts for parts, dates and miles. Likewise, part of the service/inspection is a fault code check and abs bleed test at every 6000 miles, should be able to get receiepts from dealer where they had it done. My dealer will stamp my service manual when I bring it in for the computer checks. Might not hurt to take it to take it to the dealer to do an inspection of the bike before you buy it.

warranty issue

It does not void your warranty when you or an independant shop performs work on your vehicle. Only concern, unless you have changed or modified anything that was 'not' factory approved or originally equipped. Use approved parts. Use proper torque, and common sense. If you cannot perform the work yourself, take it to a shop that does. An example is your access to special tools, and obviously, your know how.

If your vehicle is still under the factory warranty period by miles and date, warranty will still be honored. Provide there are no tampering or abuse to any part failure. Or a non approved part causing subsequent damage to another part. Your factory technician is the one that will find any and all reasons to deny your warranty coverage (incl. neglect of maintenance) ......from behind the scenes, the factory tech is the one that makes the final call, unless you have a special case where a factory rep is involved, then the tech will have no say.

When you find a Dealer you are comfortable having your bike worked on...... drop off some donuts for the guys.......they'll do everything to help ya..
