front brake switch issues

I have a 2000 K1200RS with an unusual problem with the front brake. Apparently theres something broken inside because the lever is much to far out to have been made that way.
I have to take my palm fully off the hand grip to get to it. I know there is an adjustment, and I have attempted to remedy by turning the screw. But when I do that, the brake light switch comes on and will not go off until I turn the screw back to where it was. I hope to remove the assembly and peer at whats going on in there, but thought I'd ask first. Anyone been down this road before?
