A cautionary tale

Recently purchased a used 2000 RS with only 12.5k on the odometer. Looked very clean and well kept. The owner had a receipt for a full service done at 12k. I took it for a short ride and all seemed well so the deal was made. I put about 100 miles on it with no problem and thought I would check the fluid levels before taking it on a three day run around the Southwest. Much to my horror I found the FD almost dry. I doubt there was a half ounce in it. Probably what was left after the person who serviced it last and then forgot to refill. I flushed out the FD five times with kerosene running in it gear for about ten minutes each time till it was coming out fairly clean and the gunk on the magnet was to an acceptable minimum. Fortunately no large chunks on the magnet. I refilled with M1 synthetic 75-90W and took it for a short spin. No noticeable problems and hopefully it will continue that way.
So...always double check the work of others and if you don't know how, learn! Trust but verify...Reagan
