Cool question on tire size

I have an '02 K1200RS, which has the standard five inch rear wheel and on which I am running the standard 170/60ZR17 tires. The max miles have been able to get is 5,000 miles per tire. The owners manual states that an optional size tire is 180/55ZR17, I am interested if anyone has had any success with this combination. Thanks,

Re:Tire Size

I think most people will tell you that you should go with a 5.5" rim before doing that as not to distort your tire to much, I went to a 190 and my wife went to a 180 but we both have 6" AC Schnitzer rims, so if you really wont to go to the 180 (I would) I think I'd try and hunt down a 5.5" rim, that's my 2 worth.:-)

The option tire size also needs the option 5.5" rim.

But you still will not get any more miles from the biger tire. you ride too fast and have way too much fun.

tire question

Thank your for comments, the possibility of switching rim sizes is more about opening up the opportunites to replace tires on the road. In the upper midwest and plains there are not many BMW dealers, and they appear to be the only ones who carry a 170/60/17. Going to the 180/50/17 will seemingly make the dealers of Japanese brands possible providors.
