'03 GT seat lock issues...

Have any of you fine folks out there had issues with the lock for the seat mechanism? The original owner my bike told the dealership that the lock had twice "vibrated out". supposedly the lock is like $80 bucks, so as of now I am sans-lock. Let me tell you, it is a PAIN IN MY @$$ to pull the side case off, dig the flathead screwdriver out of my tankbag, jiggle it just right... Any suggestions? I will nut-up and buy the lock if it will stay in place, or maybe make a simple actuating lever like on my atv.

I never had a "loose seat lock" problem om my '04.
That said, what exactly does the seat lock protect besides the seat and battery theft??
For $80.00(plus re-keying), I would make a lever latch system.

How come it's hard to take the side cases off??? Is an '03 different than an '04 in that respect?? Or am I just missing something??

My issue with the GT seat is a bit different. It jams, and I end up removing the side case bracket and using a large screwdriver to open the latch. Used to be the seat cord managed to find a spot causing the seat to be jammed in place. Careful replacement of the seat seems to have resolved it.

No idea of how to get the lock itself out of the luggage bracket, though. Epoxy glue the replacement into the bracket?

That seat lock design and location is BS. I've always wondered if BMW had some idiot junior engineer design it.
Beyond that I've had locking, unlocking and sticking issues with the lock also in the past. I got sick of it and finally took the whole thing apart, sprayed it with WD40 and carefully put it back together. It's been fine since (6 months). It's easier if I push the key in hard so the rim recesses a bit. I still usually have to take the sidecase off to work it though.

Install A Small Piece Of Nylon String

To the cam lever, run said string to the right and tie off somewhere near the rear brake reservoir. To open simply pull on the string. And NO, there are no valuables locked under my seat...other than the 16th Century Gold Piece in a Lucite case....just for emergencies don't you know.

Now, for the record....I didn't invent this fix myself....came from this forum sometime in the far recent past.

In the distant past I refitted the seat lock with its extension when I added the luggage rails. I seem to remember there was something unusual and here it is in the pic with a locking tab to stop it falling out:
