Do K Bikes Have Spline Problems?

I currently own an '04 1150r. I am thinking about a 1200RS or GT, but before trading one potential problem for another (R bikes all seem to be susceptable to spline failure) - do K bikes have the same problem?

I've got an '03 GT with 85k miles. It's NEVER had a spline job. This was a requirement for prior K's but hasn't been an issue with this generation K-1200RS / GT.

Rear engine seals... well, that's another story.

I've only ever seen one post of a bad clutch spline failure on this and the other board. The photos were like 'Nightmare on Elm Street'. I can only think you have to be a pretty hard (AB)-user on the clutch, wheelies and pullaways to do that kind of damage.

Apologies and credit to the OP as I lost his link. But here's one of the pics:

I'm in the exact same situation as you... except I already bought my K1200RS. I sold my 2002 R1150R for a few reasons, one of which was the potential for spline failure. The boards are full of buzz about the oilhead bikes and their crappy clutch spline design.

I bought a 2001 K1200RS and have not found any significant evidence that they share the same issues with the R cousins. I haven't really found any big issues with these bikes. One guy warned me about a big potential problem with red and blue lights flashing in the mirrors unexpectedly, but so far I haven't seen any sign of that problem.

I've put nearly 4000 miles on this bike in the 6 weeks that I've owned it. I've never looked back. I'm very happy with "the brick" and expect that it will give me many years of great service.

DMK:
The R-bikes have had a history of "some" spline failures, certainly not "all of the R-bikes". I have put 100K on two RT's and had no issues, and I do not know anyone who has had such a failure. Reading posts about them is scarry, but I think it is blown out of proportion. The thing you really want to do is keep your 1150R and buy a K1200RS/GT also!

I have put over 132,000 miles on my KRS. No spline problems, nor ever needed to lube it.
But hey watch out for Porcupine splines, they will go through a new rear tire.
