Cool Cab Hit My Bike

Hey Ya'll,

A Taxi knocked over my bike today:

Scratches on the right faring.
Scratches on the right mirror.
Scratches on the panel beneath the right faring (don't know what it's called).
Broken brake handle.
Bent foot brake.

The bike was perfect prior, so I figure on getting it all done.
It's pretty open and shut.
He admitted to it.
My girl friend saw it happen.
Two of my neighbors saw it happen.

He wanted to get a quote from me to see if it would fall below $350.00 in which case he said he would pay cash. Otherwise, he would run it through the Cab Company's insurance.

That's it. Just wanted to get some input. I've categorically never had an accident, so I'm new to all of this.

Ian

PS The cover was on the bike when this happened and now it has holes in it. This is nit picking, but it didn't have holes in it this morning.

The side panels are $800, so it won't fall in his $350 limit. Make him run it through is insurance

The adjustable front brake lever only comes as a complete unit and is over $100.00, so I guess the $350.00 cash deal is out the window.

If you want the fairing pieces already painted from the factory, your gonna be looking at closer to $1500 for the side panel alone. Check out the parts list at Max BMW and you can get an idea on costs and part numbers. Don't ask how I know this.

File a Report

File a police report, as insurance may require it for damage over 500 dollars. I've heard of people saying "trust me" and the next thing you know the guilty party files a report first blaming that the victim was responsible. YMMV.

Getting the paperwork done is half the battle.

Bummer

I had some ditz knock mine over while it minded it's own business in my parking space @ my apartment several years ago. It was the first week I had it, she paid dearly. I believe when I was done it was pushing $3000.00. It was front fairing, side fairing, mirror, brake levers front & rear, my KGT leg and hand protector and I think a windscreen. Of course that was w/dealer labor too. Oh and yes, I did have the police come out and do a report.

Whatever, it will be more than $350.00, and get a reort filed with the police or whatever your jurisdiction requires.

This happened to me on my b-day this year. Right side as well, very similar breaks and scratches as you. It cost $4500.00 through BMW Daytona. I'm sorry about the hit, it sucks big time. I was without my bike for two weeks. Good luck and add in the bike cover as well. My helmet was on the bike when he hit it and I told his insurance that my helmet was now compromised, sent receipts for the helmet, the reflective stickers that had to be replaced and the cost of the bike being fixed and the towing bill. Good luck!
