'04 RS overheating problem

I'm on a road trip this weekend to Columbus OH, visiting the AMA Museum (pics when I get home). Anyhow, was in downtown Columbus riding around for a bit. I noticed the temp gauge had gone up into red and the warning light came on. I realized that the fans had not kicked on, so I jumped on the highway, bike cooled down to normal and no more problems until next traffic slow down in Pittsburgh.

I'll be home tomorrow and want to look into the problem, don't have the tools on the road to do it.

Anybody have any issues like this? Obviously, I'll check the fuses and relays first, but so far everything else on the bike works fine. Was able to reach in to the fan w/pen and found that the blades are spinning w/out any difficulty.

quick test: blow your horn- cooling fan and horn are protected by same fuse.

earlier bikes had problems with fans locking up, melting the plastic 'bearings', long before your 04 there was a 'better' OEM fan.

the relay in inside the box under the tank.

FWIW, everytime I wash my bike I put it on the centerstand in 2 or 3rd gear, set the throttle lock at about 2k and run it until the fans cycle at least once.

Motorcycle cooling fans typically die when they get tight or lock-up from Non-use.

Good Luck with troubleshooting
