Electrical/batter problem in a 2000?

Hello,

I recently, very dumbly left the key in the on position on my bike and drained the battery. When I tried hooking the battery to a charger it would just click the charger off and not take any power. Tried this directly to the battery as well as with the battery attachment that was on the side of the bike. Also tried it with multiple chargers and got the same effect.

When I removed the battery from the bike it started taking a charge just fine, and got it up to 10v before I stopped. When I tried the battery back in the bike I don't get any power. None of the lights come on (not even the dash lights) and the fuel pump doesn't prime. The dealer suggested that the battery didn't have enough juice to start up the bike, but I figured a better than 75% charge would be enough. Am charging the battery up to full right now and will try it again.

Has anyone else had similar problems with a 2000 K1200RS?

Thanks,

BWM

10 volts is a pretty dead battery. Straight off charge it should be around 14 volts, dropping to 12 volts when left off charge 1/2 hour. Why did you stop charging it?

You are risking welding the contacts on the starter relay if you haven't already done so.

With the key off, if you connect the battery and there's a big spark, that's what has happened.

Your battery is either still not fully charged, or it has a faulty cell. The dealer is right so far.

You don't mention how old the battery is. Vox is right, 10V is way flat. Just because a 12V battery is holding 10V doesn't mean its more than 75% charged ... you can't go off voltage. If the battery is more than four years old, I'd consider replacing it.
