Vin Decoder -- Help

http://www.bimmerspecialist.com/usa/...20VIN%20DECODE

I went to this site to "decode" my VIN...

And it says my production date is 2001 / 04

Does that mean I have a 2002 model, produced in April 2001?

Or, does it mean I have a 2001 model, producted in April 2001?

I ask this because after doing some research, I'm beginning to think I have a 2002 model based on the appearance of my front fairing. Pics of my K1200 RS here:

Any help would be appreaciated!

For a second check, most BMW parts on the bike (most of the plastics) have a molded date code stamp. It's quite simple to work it out, they usually use a 'clock' face pattern for month and year or a block of numbers.

The easiest plastic to remove and check is the rear under seat. When you are working on the bike it's worth checking some of these. I know for example that my right side tupperware panel was replaced, as it is much later than the bike year. So I first checked over that side for anything wrong, bent or damage. I replaced the tank plastic and that date code was a couple of years ago when the bike was registered in '97.

I've got a boneyard rear drive on at the mo. They told me it was off a 2003 bike which I confirmed from the date 'clocks' cast underneath.

If you find your bike has a mixture of part date codes well before and after the VIN registration date, then start worrying about its history! I have heard vehicle registration and VIN data can be up to 6 months out due to export/import.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

It appears I indeed have a 2001 model (based on VIN sequence #10 = 1) and built/manufactured in April of 2001. It has the newer tupperware usually associated with 2002+ model year RS's and I think the power assist ABS... so there you go... at least for bikes exported to Canada. Normally, for most motorcycle manufacturers, date of manufacture is the year prior to model year date. For example, on my 2005 Triumph Tiger 995i... the date of manufacture was March, 2004.
