transmission housing

Just worked out i have to change my Transmission housing..does anyone have any hints whether this is hard or not? any hints at all?

Big job, lots of hours and some spcl tools.

Look at search for clutch r and R

I've got lotsa hours...not riding it coz it's broke. When i left the road the centre stand got ripped out by a big rock and pulled the screws out with it....pretty sure it's just the housing that needs replacement. what type of special screws do i need? is this a job for some guys who are pretty handy around a bike, or is it too big?

I looked at stripping all the internals out of mine to get it powder coated. But got scared of what might lie ahead and eventually plugged all the seals and shafts and sprayed it.

Personally, if I had a damaged casing I might try to get a complete tranni from a Boneyard off a newer bike.

Did the bolts just pull out or did it brake apart the bosses..transmission leak?..

I still have a good picture in my head of the underside of the Tranni. The stand mounting points are really thick parts of the casting. the 'pillars' which is where the bolts go into have to be strong because the whole weight of the bike is on them as it rolls up on the center stand. I was seeing some salt corrosion around there, hence my repaint work.

First off I would try to see if the body of the tranni casting has been damaged. Is oil leaking out?

The stand pillars are some way below the main casing and it may be possible to have some TIG welding done there (even upside down) without emptying the casing. But don't hold your breath about the result, because the ali castings are not that pure in my personal opinion.

weld

Had some welding done by a specialist, cost me a 6 pack of bourbon and coke. Check it out, may be possible. Other alternatives also when bolts have been ripped out.

Hi guys, I have Relaxa's bike in my shed and will be pulling it down a little tonight to have a better look.
On the preliminary view, looks like the "crash test dummy" took out the front wheel, little fairing damage and ripped the centre stand off the transmission.
The bolts (and posts) have been completely sheared off with at least one hole on the transmission housing.

So what we need to know:
Transmission housing is it worth just pulling the transmission off and handing it over to a BMW repairer to replace the housing?
Any ideas on the cost in Australia for a housing?
Is it a big job to remove the transmission?
And special tools required to get the transmission out?

Any advise would be great.

Breaking the rear drive and swingarm pivot pins loose requires some serious torque. Heat the pivots, use a 6-point socket, and a two or three-foot cheater on a breaker-bar.

You'll need a way to lift the bike frame off the engine ... I used an engine hoist.


You'll also need a 30mm (IIRC) deep socket with a window cut into it to set the final drive pivot bearings and the swing arm pivot bearings.

I was only working on the alternator, so I didn't need to pull the transmission, but I was only a couple steps away. You should do the seals while you have the transmission apart, and replace the clutch. You'll need an alignment tool for the clutch.

Sierra Cement: Good for skis, bad for knees.
