oil type, brand and amount?

Gonna be doing my first oil change on my "new" 1999 k1200rs and I'm curious to see what everyone else uses. I'm especially interested in the amount of oil required. I've heard overfilling a k12 is BAD news so any info is appreciated. Heard something about some royal purple synthetic that's apparently incredible but I honestly don't know what'd be good. Thanks

Honda Nighthawk-50mph+raccoon=totaled
1986 Honda Magna V45-sold to a tween for his 1st bike=future totaled bike
1999 BMW K1200RS DAKAR-I'm 23 years old and this thing will probably be running after I'm dead, it is a Beamer. Love it.

I have an '00 K12RS that gets synthetic gear lube in the tranny and final drive but I put Valvoline semi-syth 20-50W into the motor. No problems for 12 years now.

After the initial fill, I start it and fill 200 ml increments till it's centered in the sight glass. Easy Peasy...........

Follow this internel link for a list of HOW-TO published by one of the supporting vendor of this site:
http://pirateslair.net/Howto.htm

As this web page covers other BMW models, make sure you go down a bit into the section with Title: BMW 98-2004 K1200RS / 02-2005 K1200GT How-To
Once you are in the correct section, the oil change procedure is the 12th item from the bottom.

If you are really into doing your own maintenance, you should also get a CLYMER SHOP MANUAL (approx $40). This specific CLYMER manual covers the K1200RS, the K1200GT (2003-2005) and the K1200LT (all years),
