Talking 2006 K1200GT Recommendation

Howdy Everyone,

I'm thinking of upgrading from a R1100RT to a K1200GT. I'm a recent BMW convert and I've only owned the RT for the second half of the 2012 season. It's a nice bike but it just doesn't do it for me. I did a demo ride of the 2006 GT at the Americade and absolutely loved it. So now I believe it is time to put the money up and go for it.

Issue being from what I've been able to glint from the forums out in the ether, there are issues with the K1200 and with the long distance solo riding I do, reliability is key. So help me out are the issues brought up online just normal or is the K1200 with the right care and upgrades be a reliable daily ride. My particular concern is the cam chain issues...

Cheers

these are my thoughts on your post
make sure it has all the upgrade's recommended by the mfgr
depending on milage CHANGE the timing chain and sprockets at or around 36-k
aswell as the latest jump gards
check the clutch `,a squak and sqeal is normal but any shudderring or vibraition is not
depending on your riding habbits they like to eat rear brake pads so stay on top of them and dont ever let them eat into the rotar
and change the final drive at every 10-k if your not sure when then change it anyway!!!
good luck my 07 puts a smile on my face everytime i ride her !!!

i've spent most my money on bike's boat's and broad's the rest i've wasted..

I agree with checking that it has had all the updates as needed. I am the original owner of my '06 and just took it on a AZ to Cabo trip without any concern about reliability. I currently have about 81K with the original brake pads, I don't do much city riding.

If you get one I hope your enjoy it as much as I have mine.

Couple of additional random thoughts -

Obviously the K1200GT is a lot faster than an R1100RT. 60-100 on full throttle is a lot of fun.

Agree to make sure that the various recalls were done.
Fuel connections at the tank were plastic when new, most of us have replaced them with the aftermarket metal ones, as the plastic connectors will fail.
Quite a few of us have converted the low beam to HID - generally viewed as a very good upgrade.
Shocks will be worn by 25K, so factor this into the purchase price.

Can you tell us more about the bike you are looking at?

However, it should in no way be associated with that great body of factual information relating to orthodox Zen Buddhist practice. It's not very factual on motorcycles, either."
