2004 K1200RS with 200 miles

To All,
I thought you might find this interesting. Last weekend found me at the BMW / Harley dealer in Rochelle Park NJ looking to pick up an oil filter for my red '04 K1200RS. There was a row of bikes that had been serviced and waiting to be picked up. In that row was a blue and white '04 K. It drew my attention and I saw the service tag indicated new tires. The owner and the service guy came over to go over the tires. After the service guy left I asked the owner what his experience with the bike had been. How was the ride ? "Great". How many miles ? "200" he said. I figured 200k so I start shooting questions at him about the bike; Did he replace the quick disconnects ?. Hows the stearing head dampner ? Did he do anything with the rear seal ? He said no he hardly had riden the bike and thats when I found out the bike has 200 freakin miles not 200k. Sure enough the odo had 221. The guy says he owns several bikes and bought this one because it was on his "bucket list". I'm thinking that if this bike was on my list of things I really wanted that I would drive the thing. I also wonder what the condition is of anything rubber on the bike since even if it was sitting in a heated garage there would be deterioration / hardening much like the tires he replaced. I'm thinking that might not be such a good thing. 200 miles ! Anyway there you have it. Theres a million stories in the naked cities. This was one of them.

John

The Naked City

Hi John,

There's a number of what I would call low mileage K-RS's out there. That's REALLY low. Gotta wonder about the fluids and anything rubber, etc.

I guess initially you didn't look at the bike close enough to see the shine on a bike with only 200mi. vs. 200K !!

I dont see the problem - the owner had the gumption to change the tyres which had degraded. what makes you think he;s not had other service work done? Servicing isn't only based on milage. For all we know that 200 miles could be mainly done by the techs after an inspection. When I have my bikes serviced the chap who does the work always takes it out for a quick run to check everything works as it should - over 9 years that soon mounts up.

Its a crap shoot with a bike like that. Yes the guy changed the tires which is smart since they were probably hard as a hockey puck. But more importantly, all the seals and such in the bike were probably just as dicey. The bike was never driven. You have to run a bike often enough to keep everything lubricated and "used". Used isn;t starting it up and every once in a while which I doubt he ever did. 9 year old bike with 200 miles no longer under warrenty. Oof - fa !
