GPS Mount for Tom Tom XXL 550

Does anyone have a suggestion on a GPS mount for a Tom Tom XXL 550 with a 5" screen for my '99 K1200 RS? I saw some Ram mounts but I'm not sure which one will work best.

Sat Nav Mounts

Hi

I am no expert, however I have looked in to this recently and there are a number of alternatives:

1) There is a brake fluid reservoir mounting option with a ram mount ball on the end of it.

2) There are even some mirror stem attachments

3) You can not use a stem mount on our model.

4) I went for a very cheap option where I used some pipe to bridge the gap from handle bar to handle bar. I was then able to use a conventional handle bar mount to mount my GPS.

Hope this helps.

Mark,

Greetings from this side of the pond! Thanks for your response.

I saw a Ram mount that you attach to either the clutch side or brake fluid reservior. Not sure if I would like having to view my GPS on the side like that. I prefer looking at it straight ahead in my direct line of vision.

It sounds like you've rigged a good innovative GPS mount for your purposes at minimal expense.

I might investigate some type of shelf that can attach to the inner wind shield that I can mount it to.

Cheers,

HB

BTW, what year/model K bike you ride?

Hi HB

I ride the same as you! I posted a similar question to you and got a PM and photos (I could send the photos to you) from a very ingenious guy from Montreal, who attached the mounting to the stem cover:

The mount is made from a piece of aluminum pipe with about a 25mm outer diameter and a 2mm wall thickness. I cut a piece about 4mm long and used a bit of emery cloth to polish it smooth. To get it nice and polished took about ½ hour.

The ball mount from RAM I used:

RAM Mount RPR-351-WBB-F Plastic Flange Base with B-Ball

I just trimmed the plastic base to fit inside the aluminum pipe and epoxied it in. Once the epoxy set I sanded the bottom flat because the epoxy comes out a bit rough.

I then just used a bit of epoxy to secure it to the center cap.

I used a 75mm extension arm to connect to the GPS

RAM Mount RAM-B-201U Aluminum 3.0 inch Standard Length Dual 1.0 inch Socket Arm

I didn’t use a waterproof case for my GPS and just used another plastic flange base which I velcro’d to the bottom of the standard auto GPS as I’m a bit of a fair weather rider. J

From RAM you can get a weatherproof case for about $25 US.

Attached are the pictures. Any other questions you have just email me.

Cheers
Hope this might be off use.

I guess we're all trying to build a better mousetrap and innovatively retrofit our K bikes, since there doesn't seem to be a good product currently in the marketplace that I've discovered yet.

The simplest solution could be to use some way to secure the GPS right below the ignition, but velcro or gorilla glue seems abit primitive and unimaginative. I think you can engineer a mounting system that hooks under the handle bars--there is a recess underneath that would be ideal.

Today I installed the carbon fiber tank protector and fuel cap trim kit on and it looks great! I found a place cheaper on-line than the Pirates Lair site to buy it. Worth the money to protect your tank. What color is your K bike?

Cheerio,
HB

Tom Tom Start 55M

Hi,

Similar to the above set-up, I can run my GPS (and charge) off a Nelson-Rigg device (see motorcyclegear.com for details), so there are no wires attached to the bike.

The mount plate is from a Garmin, but was easy to modify.

Front and centre without taking my eyes too far off the road.
